'Green' lakes could accelerate global warming, new research warns

Fertilisers washing into lakes could increase methane emissions, potentially undoing progress in addressing climate change.

The biggest human influence on climate change and global warming is the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Now research published in the journal Limnology and Oceanography Letters is the first to show how the size of lakes and the nutrients in their waters from fertilisers are contributing to that influence.

"Our research pioneers a new way of determining the global atmospheric effect of lakes using satellite information on lake greenness and size distribution," said Professor John Downing.

"Our research team assembled the largest global dataset on lake emission rates of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide," said Professor Downing.

"When we analysed the data, we found that emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere were influenced by the amount of eutrophication but also that lake size matters a lot for carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide."

If the world's bodies of water become more eutrophic they could release so much methane it may negate the emissions reductions made by humanity moving away from fossil fuels.

Undoing all of the progress.

What a scam.

Ah, the schedule holds.
At least one “global warming” warning per day.
The chicken little syndrome, demonstrated.
But, of course, the sky has changed not.

The leftists beloved wetlands, lakes and oceans already produce more methane, without human help, than their dreaded cow farts.
Fertilizers makes plants grow, they absorb CO2.

Sorry, no farming for you undeveloped nations of the world. I guess malaria wasn’t working fast enough.

Isn’t it great how their population control zealotry fits right into their climate change hysteria?

The Yakima River used to be very silt laden which kept the sunlight from reaching the river bed. Over the several years and efforts at reducing silt laden run-off and erosion the river cleared up. Now the sunlight is activating mass algae bloom, which the environmentalists are claim area result of phosphates.

Here’s an experiment for you to try at home. Fill a gallon bucket of water and set it out where it can get plenty of sunshine. See how many days it takes for that bucket to start forming algae.

All of these Global Warming stories start with; could, possibly, believed, may, and so on. This is what they call science.

'Green' lakes could accelerate global warming, new research warns

Or they could not.

Because there is no data to indicate that they have caused global warming in the last 3 billion years.

Feeding the algae that turn the eeeeeevil see-oh-too into pure oxygen is bad, m’kay?

Virtually all the carbon in algae comes from CO2 from the atmosphere dissolved in water. Most of that carbon is trapped on the bottom when the algae die and sink, but some of the dead algae biomass is converted to methane and nitrogen oxides. There is a net removal from the atmosphere of CO2. There is a slight net increase of methane and nitrogen oxides but at fairly low levels.

The biggest effect of fertilizer runoff is the depletion of oxygen due to algal blooms, which hurts fish.
