This attack is NOT trending on Fakebook today (which is pushing a story that Glucifer was a Russian agent).

Travis is a major *strategic* AFB. It is the military version of LAX, and is critical to the entire Pacific region, as well as the Pacific fleet. As such it is a huge target.

Now, this being said, it is usually a *profoundly* bad idea to attack US airbases, because the US has been crystal clear that to us, this represents a huge escalation in a conflict.

For example: they attack our airbase with chemical weapons, we escalate to nuclear weapons. That serious.

Our airbases in conflict areas like Afghanistan and Iraq had at least 5 mile deep kill zones surrounding them.

Bottom line: if this twit is associated with any terrorist organization or country, they are quickly going to get seven bells kicked out of them.

No shots were fired makes it sound alike a good thing.

The primary function of security at these types of bases is to protect the strategic resources of the base, i.e., aircraft and other weapons systems. There’s not a lot you can do at a base traffic gate when a vehicle comes unexpectedly barreling through, but there’s plenty you can do afterwards to neutralize the threat before it reaches the resources (which this perp was nice enough to do himself). The United states Air Force Security Police/Security Forces have a outstanding record of neutralizing threats of this kind.

“I was stationed at Travis 93-97. They base entries had no barriers, and were typically manned by an E2 with a 9mm sidearm.”

Curtis Lemay would have court martialed the guards.

I know the base near me has pop ups... probably triggered by the gate guard.... but the guard would have to have the presence of mind to trip it.

I can pretty much guarantee you that they have pop up barriers today. Every major military installation has them.

Under Obama this would be investigated as a workplace accident.

My older brother lives in Fairfield just a mile or two from the front gate. Craziness!

Not just the presence of mind, but some kind of indication that there is a threat. An ordinary looking SUV approaching the gate at a normal speed is not, in itself, sufficient cause, to pop up the barriers. None of us were there so we don’t know all the details.
