Trump's China tariffs aren't crazy

....Most trade experts see little economic justification for those tariffs, and a bevy of loopholes Trump included....

Trump is on firmer ground with his plan to impose tariffs on $50 billion worth of Chinese imports. “The goal is to get China to treat U.S. companies in China the way we treat Chinese companies in our market,” a senior Trump administration official told reporters on March 22. A forthcoming government report, he said, “clearly demonstrates there are unfair practices by China as it relates to their efforts to acquire US technology and to favor their companies over US companies.”

Unlike the steel and aluminum tariffs, many trade experts and business leaders agree in principle with that assessment of Chinese behavior.

....IP theft could cost the U.S. economy as much as $600 billion per year globally, with China accounting for most of that, according to the National Bureau of Asian Research, an independent research group...

....Trump administration officials say the products targeted will most likely be in high-tech industries China has highlighted as key to gaining economic dominance in the future.

The piece doesn't say the tariffs are good but also doesn't condemn them...it merely tries to explain as best a "mainstream" reporter can the reasoning behind the tariff move.

The press and some businesses and countries are pressing the idea that US tariffs are bad. NOT TRUE. We have been low to no tariffs for a very long time, while the rest of the world had higher tariffs. Now we have far more stuff than we need. We send literal ship loads of used clothes on cargo ships leaving the US because we have too many clothes. And we have too many ships coming to the US loaded and leaving empty.

We can stand to have tariffs. They work as taxes on foreigners. They will shrink the US depth. And they will support our industries. And don’t be fooled. Everyone else even our closest friends levy taxes on our goods.

And this is the best time to put in tariffs. We have a great economy. A trade war would simply stop the Fed from raising interest rates. It would force people here to buy American. And it would shrink the debt. All are wins. Our buy and throw away economy has gone on too long. We need to acknowledge that tariffs are worse than no tariffs. But one sided tariffs are worse of all. And that is what we have now.

Amazing that there is all this talk about a trade war solely because the President won’t allow other nations to abuse America anymore. These other nations have been attacking us for years!

We built a machine to deal with this IP issue years ago. It was TPP. A united front with many countries to address this on a unified platform. We could have been YEARS into this effort by now. But Trump threw it away because it wasn't a chest thumping opportunity for him.

Yes, they don’t like the idea that we are actually fighting back.

The TPP was a disaster and attacked U.S. sovereignty.

The TPP was a disaster

TPP would have lowered tariffs (taxes) AND would have addressed intellectual property. And, instead of 1 country pressuring China on IP there would have been something like a dozen.

Using that flawed logic, every treaty affects sovereignty.
