Denounced by His Party as a Nazi, Arthur Jones Wins Illinois G.O.P. Congressional Primary
The New York Times ^ | 03/20/18 | Liam Stack

Arthur Jones, a Holocaust denier described as a Nazi by the Illinois Republican Party, won the Republican primary on Tuesday in the state’s Third Congressional District, a heavily Democratic district that includes part of Chicago and its suburbs, according to The Associated Press.

Mr. Jones, 70, unsuccessfully sought the nomination five times before, and his victory on Tuesday was a foregone conclusion after the Republican Party failed to draft another candidate to enter the race against him.

“Even if only myself and my wife voted for me, I’d win the primary because the Republican Party screwed up big time,” Mr. Jones said in an interview.

The Illinois Republican Party has sought to distance itself from Mr. Jones in recent weeks, blanketing the district with campaign fliers and robocalls urging voters to “stop Illinois Nazis,” according to a robocall script provided by the party. Mr. Jones said he had received three robocalls himself.

“Arthur Jones is not a real Republican — he is a Nazi whose disgusting, bigoted views have no place in our nation’s discourse,” Tim Schneider, the Illinois Republican Party chairman, said in a statement. He said the party had urged voters “to skip over his name when they go to the polls” and moving forward planned on “vehemently opposing Jones with real campaign dollars.”

A spokesman for the Illinois Republican Party said those dollars would be used to support an independent candidate in the November general election. Party leaders are in talks with several potential candidates, the spokesman said, but have not yet decided which one to endorse.

The Third Congressional District of Illinois has not been represented by a Republican since 1975, and few people, besides Mr. Jones, believe he has a chance of winning the general election in November.

“and moving forward planned on “vehemently opposing Jones with real campaign dollars.”

The Illinois Republican organization is a complete fraud at the “leadership” level anyway. This clown has zero chance of winning that seat and they’re going to piss money away running an independent.

He has no real campaign to speak of and was denounced by the state party chair and the sitting governor. This is just the NYT doing its best to make it look like ANYONE wanted this wack job as a candidate. The real story is that running in Lipinski’s district is so thankless for a republican, thanks to legal gerrymandering in Illinois that would be called illegal in Pennsylvania, that such a district even exists in the first place.

He could’ve run as a Democrat and won in a landslide.

He had no primary opposition because the GOP has NO chance in that district. It doesn’t mean much.

He could’ve run as a Democrat and won in a landslide.

Except he considers himself a Republican.

He won because the GOP didn't bother to run a serious candidate in this locked-up Dem district; so an extremist - who has run before - ran on his own initiative. I wouldn't be surprised if many of his votes were from Dems, who knew they had an easy win, and just wanted to make the GOP look bad by voting for this guy.

The NYT will probably make it sound like this guy represents mainstream Trump voters.

This kind of distorted theater is right of the SorozNazi playbook. I’m betting that one of his front groups found, got this guy to run

Obviously there aren’t any actual Republicans in that district which means the only candidates they could dredge up would be Democrats or maybe an independent. They should have been cultivating some brave souls there years ago, and you do that in tough districts by going in and speaking to the residents one on one. Yeah, lots of footwork.

Now that the Republicans have been smeared as “nazi” they think they can endorse or back an independent and that person not be smeared by association with the party of the nazi? Good luck with that.

NYT did its part by making sure they could get Jones and Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who the story notes was pardoned by Trump, both described as “far-right” by an ADL guy. There’s your guilt by association right there. Sheriff Joe, who has Hispanic grandchildren, MUST be a racist and a nazi because the ADL thinks he’s the same as Arthur Jones. Fine “reporting” work, NYT.
