Amazon Web Services (to provide) (Defense Department) Secret Commercial Cloud Services
US Transportation Command ^ | January 3, 2018 | Pamela S Hall, Contracting Officer

The United States Transportation Command intends to contract on an Other than Full and Open Basis with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Seattle WA for Secret Commercial Cloud Services.

AWS will provide virtual machines, storage, network bandwidth, and IP management.

In November 2017, AWS launched a Secret Region which is the first and only commercial cloud provider to offer regions to serve Government workloads across the full range of data classifications, including Unclassified, Sensitive, Secret and Top Secret.

The US Transportation Command is responsible for moving troops and equipment around the globe.

This cloud service contract had been objected to and held up by Microsoft who just withdrew their objections.

Private employees with the keys to the castle. Hmmm.

I'm all about privatizing government, but this seems a bit uncomfortable.

The Russians and Chinese would put their best hackers on this cloud hack, night and day.

the people who operate this all have the required DoD/DOE/SCI
clearances. AWS has operated 3 letter agency clouds for some time.

And Bezos also owns the Washington Post, doesn’t he? “Forget it Jake, it’s darkstate town.”

.
How can anyone at Amazon possibly get a security clearance?

This is outrageous.

“The Russians and Chinese would put their best hackers on this cloud hack, night and day.”

IF they even needed to.

Working for the State we just got a memo last week saying if you got data in the cloud you best have a damn good reason and approval for it, else get it down to our own servers!

I understand that AWS is air-gapped.

Granting clearances is not the issue.

It’s about constant discipline by every worker that logs on and off.

Just another reason I’ll never knowingly use ‘The Cloud’ for anything. How ‘bout you?

Well, I’m heavily into cloud storage, Google Docs.

My entire business is there and I copy everything to a local drive every day at noon.

The advantages of portability and easy multi-user access is worth the risk of hacking. Banking is all by PayPal, they’ve never been hacked.

Yup, I worry about cloud security, just need good backup.

Frankly, the greatest security you can buy is Microsoft Defender and Windows 10. All this ransomware, hacking would be gone if everyone would pay for Windows 10 and get Defender for free.
