~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Vandenberg Air Force Base, California

Vandenberg Air Force Base is a United States Air Force Base located 9.2 miles northwest of Lompoc, California. It is under the jurisdiction of the 30th Space Wing, Air Force Space Command (AFSPC).

Vandenberg AFB is a Department of Defense space and missile testing base, with a mission of placing satellites into polar orbit from the West Coast using expendable boosters (Pegasus, Taurus, Minotaur, Atlas V, Delta IV and now SpaceX's Falcon). Wing personnel also support the Service's LGM-30G Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Force Development Evaluation program.

The host unit at Vandenberg AFB is the 30th Space Wing. The 30th SW is home to the Western Range, manages Department of Defense space and missile testing, and places satellites into near-polar orbits from the West Coast.

Wing personnel also support the Air Force's Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Force Development Test and Evaluation program. The Western Range begins at the coastal boundaries of Vandenberg and extends westward from the California coast to the Western Pacific, including sites in Hawaii. Operations involve dozens of federal and commercial interests.

The 30th Launch Group is responsible for booster and satellite technical oversight and launch processing activities to include launch, integration and test operations. The group consists of an integrated military, civilian and contractor team with more than 250 personnel directly supporting operations from the Western Range.

The 30th Operations Group provides the core capability for West Coast spacelift and range operations. Operations professionals are responsible for operating and maintaining the Western Range for spacelift, missile test launch, aeronautical and space surveillance missions.

Waaaaaay beyond cool! LOL!

Gosh, your one-car dilemma was about the same as ours at most of our bases.I don’t know about you, but I HATED being stranded without a car. When we moved to GA, he got a little Sears Vespa-like motorscooter and it was a life saver. l could get a job, and it saved a ton of gas. LOL! Of course, I worried.

What large city was the camp near? Did y’all take special trips into it to do fun stuff? We went to Atlanta. Or Macon.

I really didn’t need the car for much so it wasn’t too bad. We finally got a second car a couple of months before he was discharged and I didn’t drive it all that much.

The base is outside Jacksonville and at that time (early ‘70s) there wasn’t much to it. No reason for special trips, that’s for sure.

If we went anywhere, it was to Surf City in Topsail Island to hang out on the beach.

Good evening, radu...has the cold set in?

I woke up to heavy rain on my skylights. Then beautiful, sunny, blue sky all day, but headed to low teens and 20s for overnights. Very wet ride home.

And then a completely locked up computer. Took me forever to get things closed and rebooted.

Aw MAN! Computer hassles again? Hope it doesn’t lock up again!

The cams were working today and I saw your beautiful blue skies. Really pretty views of the mountains. Some of the streets were dry but others wet, and it sounds like your route home was one of the wet ones.

Yes, the front came through and the cold is setting in now. A storm that passed over us became tornadic RIGHT after it went by. We’re glad it waited!

Well, having a beach handy, who needs a noisy city! Must have been nice and when you’re in the service, cheap entertainment, too!

We never have lived close enough to a beach to be able to use it. We went to Savannah once with my parents, and once to the FL Panhandle. Hubby was on TDY. Had fun, though and my dad got rooms practically on the beach. Ahhh...the sound of the sea at night. Soooo soothing! Almost as nice as *sigh* rain. :)

Good evening, my...I saw a couple as well, from afar. I lived in Arroyo Grande before I came to Alaska. I was a volunteer firefighter and one of our numbers was a firefighter at Vandenberg for his regular job. He gave us a tour. It was the first time I’d been anywhere near one of those airport trucks...all enclosed with a remote nozzle on top. WOW!! Those things are tall on VERY large wheels!

It was nice back in those days. they’ve built things up drastically in the years since we were there. I wouldn’t like it now.

I love being on the beach, feeling the breeze and smelling the salt air. The sound of the surf is so relaxing. aaaaaaah!

WOW! Close call. Glad it waited til it got past you.

I could probably help myself by turning the computer off with some regularity, but I have stuff to do and “need” my stuff now. LOL!

The boss is in town for the week. Today went surprisingly smoothly.

I don’t know who else knows, but Friday Cora told me she has applied for a new job, and today she said she has an interview on Friday.

I am happy for her, and don’t blame her one bit, but if she gets this job it will be bad for us. We can barely hold our heads above water with the 4 of us, and if we are 3 plus a newbie....it will NOT be good.

It sure was a close call. It made my hair stand on end when I saw the wind changing direction while I watched the storm, and a couple of minutes later the news station broke into the show that was on to announce the new tornado warning.

Ah, so you don’t turn your computer off very often, huh? Mine’s turned off if I’m not using it. It’s in a roll top desk so the cats can’t get to the stuff on the desk. Do not want them destroying it, and they would.

Well knock me over with a feather! Your boss is there and things went smoothly? That’s new! LOL

Dang, can’t blame Cora a bit but it sucks for the three of you left behind. :-( It’s going to be really rough. So much for sleep for a while.

More snow?? I thought you were having a heat wave. Such an unpredictable winter.

You will need LOTS of popcorn. I think it’s more than a 3 ring circus in the swamp.

It is! I wish the Two Harbors nest had better sound. I’ll bet we could hear the sound of the water below the nest. Well...probably the wind overpowers it.

I like going to the beach at twilight. That’s my favorite time of the day anyhow and it’s usually quieter then. Except for the surf.

My late mother’s peeps are from that neck of the woods
and I resided in San Luis Obispo County three
different times, the second time for college. I graded
papers for a History prof who trained tour guides at
Hearst Castle yet I toured there only once as a youngster.

Did you go to AGHS or did you live there after
finishing school?

It would be nice to be able to hear the waves at Two Harbors, wouldn’t it? But if their mic is anything like the one at DH, it’s best we can’t hear much. The slightest puff of a breeze roars on that mic.

When I went to the beaches in NC, I liked sitting there at dawn. As it slowly got lighter, the sand seemed to be in motion and it was hundreds of little crabs crawling out of their holes to begin their hunt for breakfast.
And then I’d go to bed. LOL
