Defense Agency To Begin Moving Classified Data to Amazon's Secret Cloud After Protest

For the first time, the Defense Department will begin moving classified data and applications to Amazon Web Services’ Secret Region—the same cloud environment developed for the CIA and intelligence community several years ago.

The Defense Department’s sole-source decision—a contract awarded without a full and open competition—was protested by Microsoft, which itself offers a variety of cloud services to the federal government.

Actually, I don’t see that much of a problem with this - just use pre-internet encryption before putting anything in the cloud. If it never goes down the wire as anything but gibberish then its not of any use to others.

An announcement to hackers and crypto-kiddies about the DoD sending classified data to the “Secret” cloud. Brilliant!

I’d still prefer to deny an attacker access to the information via isolated systems and networks. Make every step in obtaining cleartext information as difficult as possible.

I actually have more faith in the private sector taking care of data than the government. I don’t think amazon has ever been hacked or breeched.

The data isn't moving to Amazon's cloud servers. It's just that government servers will be running Amazon's cloud software. Whatever they were running before was probably inferior.

There’s classified and then there’s classified. Let’s hope this stuff is just classified.
