I wonder how many of those people in NJ voted Democrat to “teach Trump a lesson”.

...oh well.

Golly - the reduction of the sales tax by .15th of a percent was the big tradeoff for raising the gasoline tax last year - that break didn’t last long......

In the "Mencken-ian" sense?

Yup. The full Mencken.

small spike in New Jersey's sales tax,

It just came down to 6.625% Jan 1. This was part of the deal with the rise in the gas tax. Do you think that will come down with the rise in sales tax? Of course not

“The fed’s giveth and the states taketh away.”

Another example of that is the Federal penalty for failing to purchase a health insurance policy was recently eliminated (at least for the time being), but the insurance companies wasted no time to lobby state legislatures and Governors in Blue states to slap a penalty of their own.

Don’t know where they are on that, but chances are good the states will capitulate and institute their own penalty tax as a gift to big insurance.

All this is really getting out of control.

Jersey is a small state. People can readily cross the state line for big ticket items.

Yeah, and the border state to the south, Delaware, has zero sales tax.

My first guess is that they will hemorrhage more money from taxpayers staying away from the state for 183 days of the year

This is exactly what happened when Maryland imposed a millionaires tax a few years ago. It may have been for "fairness" but it cost the state money.

Yep. And to think, people willingly vote for this thievery.

Want to see them get bumpkis when the millionaires leave the state.

Millionaires have been fleeing the state for around 20 years due to taxes. In fact in 2016, one man, David Tepper, a hedge fund guy moved to Florida and cost the NJ budget about 1%. The estimate is that he paid about 140 million annually in NJ taxes. Now he pays nothing.

Murphy apparently wants them all gone.

Gotta keep that welfare state humming along.

Evidently the voters love it.

As a lifelong resident of NJ, I have to chuckle at your post, as much as it hurts to feel the sting of the truth of it. I can tell you that for me, voting has been an endless exercise in hopeless futility. But soon I will be voting with my feet, and will get out of the socialist craphole that this once great state has become.
