Democrats show little willingness to fight GOP ahead of spending deadline

For months, Democrats promised to use their leverage on government spending to protect young immigrants at risk for deportation after President Trump canceled the program. More recently, they have demanded Congress pass universal background checks for gun buyers in the wake of another deadly school shooting.

Now, with Congress less than two weeks from a funding deadline, Democrats are showing little willingness to corner Republicans on those issues.

Their lack of appetite to provoke another showdown represents a shift after two previous fights resulted in brief government shutdowns and risks alienating the party’s liberal base crucial in midterm elections. But several events have sapped the party’s resolve. Moderate Democrats flinched after a three-day January shutdown fought over immigration; court decisions have left Trump’s cancellation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in legal limbo; and many Democrats are quietly eager to pass the next spending bill and lock in more money for key agencies.

Reading between the lines, it seems like the WP is trying to activate the ObamaBots.

The may not be fighting where we can see them, but that doesn’t mean they’re not fighting.

The Dems have moved on to gun control and the GOPe have happily assumed their usual doormat position.

Democrats had gotten all they wanted in the last spending bill and another contentious fight would run the risk of undoing all those gains.

No surprise they have decided to call it a day - for now.

to protect young immigrants

That is because Trump has completely turned the tables on the Dems. The Dems are the ones who won't cut a deal to protect the Dreamers. Trump smoked them out as extremists who simply want a campaign issue. Much more satisfying than the hapless establishment GOP, which simply wrings its hands when the Dems attack and tell the base that there is nothing that they can do other than cave in.

The Democrats and corporate liberals in the GOPe are making backroom deals regarding further efforts to thwart Trump.

Someone needs to lock the door.

I could be wrong, but I’m thinking that the spending bill contains massive spending increases, and zero cuts or eliminations that conservatives want. DACA is on hold due to some low level judge and it will takes years to get to the Supreme Court. So what is there for Rats to protest?

It seems likely this is why Tillerson was fired.

Yes, with focus on China and the Iran deal. Tillerson very weak on these two big issues.

Trump and some Republicans started to make the claim that the Democrats cared more about illegal aliens than legal Americans. The Dems are terrified of that issue—an issue that will resonate in the Congressional elections in swing districts.
