If you're like me, you don't recognize the name of John Gillespie Magee, Jr. But when I got the suggestion from Ms.Behavin for this thread (thank you Ms.B!) I knew I should go check it out and see. John Magee is the young man who wrote the very famous poem "High Flight." |
"High Flight" was composed by Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee Jr., an American serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was born in Shanghai, China, in 1922, the son of missionary parents, Rev. and Mrs. John Gillespie Magee; his father was an American and his mother was originally a British citizen.
He came to the United States in 1939 and earned a scholarship to Yale, but in September 1940 he enlisted in the RCAF and graduated as a pilot. He was sent to England for combat duty in July 1941.
In August or September 1941, Pilot Officer Magee composed "High Flight" and sent a copy to his parents. Several months later, on Dec. 11, 1941, his Spitfire collided with another plane over England, and Magee, only 19 years of age, crashed to his death.
His remains are buried in the churchyard cemetery at Scopwick, Lincolnshire. |
High Flight official poem of the RCAF and RAF
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew - And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand and touched the face of God. -~-
Thank you, sir, for your service and sacrifice!

As Luv said, we didn’t mean to hijack your thread,
the anniversary of losing NYT is coming up, and it
brought back a lot of memories.
Forgiven?

We could get rid of all the cats and be free to roam but we love the silly critters too much. So we remain prisoners. LOL! But it would be fun to meet everyone. The few times we’ve been lucky enough to meet FReepers over the years have been great.
Yep, Kathy does have family in TX and retirement isn’t that far off. :-)

Good evening, radu...did you have a quiet Sunday? Did the rain come?
We are having VERY gentle snow right now. But, daytime temps for the whole next week are showing mid 30s, and mid to LOW 20s at night. *sigh*

Hey there, Kathy.
I wondered if it was going to snow there tonight. The radar showed light stuff but sometimes it doesn’t reach the ground. Too bad this isn’t one of those times. Those temps are going to make things “fun”.
It was quiet and not quiet here. Didn’t do much but had a house full of furry wild injuns driving us crazy. LOL!

It’s been spitting quite a bit by the looks of the streets around town. Not sure where the Potter Marsh Weigh Station is but the snow’s coming down hard there. Really hard at the golf course driving range. Makes me shiver to see it.
Snow is bearing down on us now and if it holds together it should be here in a couple of hours. Presently it’s just cold and windy. Had to step outside a little while ago and the wind almost took my breath away. brrrr!!

Talked to Mike’s nurse, he has been sedated for pain.
He had severe abdominal pain and vomiting.
Blood work is okay, and he is stable for now.
They will run some tests tomorrow to see what ta heck is going on!
am exhausted and I’m going to try and get some sleep.
Thanks for being here for me tonight!

Glad to hear they have him stabilized and the blood work looks normal. Hope they can figure out what the heck is going on QUICKLY!
Hope you can get some sleep though I figure it won’t be easy. Scary stuff and being so far away doesn’t help matters. But you know he’s got family there and he’s in good hands.
Keeping the prayers going.

LOL! That’s what I do when stressed out. It works pretty well.
Hang in there. He’s going to be fine. They just need to figure out what happened so they can give him something to make it all go away.
