NRA files lawsuit over Florida gun control law

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — UPDATE (6:15 p.m.):

The National Rifle Association has filed a federal lawsuit over gun control legislation Florida Gov. Rick Scott has signed, saying it violates the Second Amendment by raising the age to buy guns from 18 to 21.

The lawsuit came just hours after Gov. Scott, a Republican, signed the compromise bill Friday afternoon.

Lawyers for the NRA want a federal judge to block the new age restriction from taking effect.

The new legislation raises the minimum age to buy rifles from 18 to 21, extends a three-day waiting period for handgun purchases to include long guns and bans bump stocks that allow guns to mimic fully automatic fire. It also creates a so-called "guardian" program that enables teachers and other school employees to carry handguns.

The new measures come in the wake of the Feb. 14 shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that killed 17 people.

“Scott’s move was tactically wise. I still don’t like it.”

No. Scott’s move was tactically disastrous and has cost him the Senate race.

Given that Trump is (rightly imo) now perceived as having given cover for Scott and the FL GOP to pass this turd of a bill, it has cost Trump his second term.

If it is constitutional to impose an age limit of 18, then how can it be unconstitutional to impose an age limit of 21?

Joined the NRA recently, but this is not a winning fight.

Just tell the anti-gunners that Bumpfire guns are SINGLE SHOT rifles. One trigger pull = one shot!

“Wow - you’re a war vet with a tour of Afghanistan under your belt? Well thank you for your service.

But your military ID says you’re only 19. Clearly, you’re not mature enough for a gun.

Sorry. :)”

Then why not make the age limit 65? See the problem with that? You have now effectively banned firearms for a certain class of citizen who over the age of majority.

What IS the constitutional age of majority? 18? 21? 25? 16?

Why do you ignore my question? What age would you deem unconstitutional?

As for the age of majority, to be consistent with the 26th Amendment, it should be 18.

Why not lower the age to 6? Many 12 year olds had to work in the 1800s. Who are you to deny them their constitutional rights - which are God-given rights, recognized by the Constitution. Except the Constitution doesn’t define when someone should be treated as fully adult.
