“The domestic steel industry is not vanishing—far from it. 70 percent of the steel bought for use in the United States is produced here in the USA. Also, American steel production hasn’t changed much over the past decades. In fact, since 2010 it’s actually increased.”

Yeah, so why are so many steel mills here gone?

The steel industry in the U.S. was decimated by two things: (1) mismanagement by corporate, union and government leaders; and (2) outdated/obsolete production facilities and processes.

The largest steel mill in the U.S. today is located in Calvert, Alabama. It is owned jointly by foreign steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. The steel industry in the Rust Belt would have faded even if there was no foreign competition.

Mills here are producing better high grade metals. It’s not like it was in the 40s, but it’s not a dead industry either.
