"Cannabis Candidate" Accused of Abuse, Misrepresenting FBI Record

The self-described “Cannabis Candidate” running for the 5th Congressional District seat has been accused by a former girlfriend and two former associates of abusive behavior.

Benjamin Thomas Wolf, who has drawn national attention for a provocative campaign ad showing him smoking a joint, also caught flak on Wednesday for blowing smoke about his supposed credentials as a “former FBI agent,” when authorities say he worked as a support staffer.

The abuse allegations were leveled in a Politico report quoting a former girlfriend and campaign intern who said Wolf was physically and emotionally abusive to her, claiming he once threw her to the ground and stood on her chest.

Additionally, a DePaul professor accused Wolf of threatening behavior after they had discussed working on a book together, leading campus police to ban Wolf from campus, according to Politico. Another woman quoted in the story alleged “abusive, escalating behavior” when they dated.

Besides the marijuana ad, Wolf’s campaign has raised eyebrows by posting a video of the candidate assembling an AR-15, and by buying ad space on porn websites.

Wolf identified himself as “a professor of government and history at Roosevelt University and East-West University.”

Roosevelt officials said Wolf is not an employee. East-West officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Wolf claims he worked as an adjunct professor at each school for one semester but said Wednesday that he has quit because the campaign left him “too busy to teach.”

In no way do I support a candidate who wants to legalize marijuana to bring in “billions in revenue” as he claims so he can fund freebie give ways.

However, I would like to address some of these allegations, while the one from the intern is disturbing and should be investigated (throwing her down and stepping on her chest) the other one simply states he was abusive to me. What does that mean? It sounds to me like she is talking about being verbally abusive but does not go into detail and does not state any physical abuse. If that’s the case, will it now be a crime to yell at someone and not say nice things to them and possibly make them cry? If so, that’s a scary road to go down....

Verbal abuse within a relationship can be just as damaging as physical abuse. My mother didn’t beat me but she beat me down with nasty comments. I would have much preferred just being slapped. That pain goes away, hateful words stay with you. I am a law abiding, tax paying, church going devoted mom, wife, grandma... she calls me a slut and whore. Which is the exact opposite of the truth. Words cut really deep. Abusive husbands... it is mostly verbal.

I understand and am not condoning it. My question is do we want to make that criminal? While terrible behavior should not be condoned we cannot criminalize reprehensible behavior. That's the beginnings of a police state. People should get out of those relationships no doubt, but they shouldn't be able to press charges and put people in jail for doing it.
