When Russia can sell all it produces without a nickels worth going to Europe, it's not giving up if they just sell elsewhere. If the EU wants to sanction itself by paying three or four times as much for gas, how is that bad for Russia?
They've put up with so much BS from Ukraine for so long there's no reason for them to continue to care what the rest of Europe wants unless those countries are willing to work on new pipelines that leave the thieves in Ukraine out of the loop. That's not giving up, it's sobering up.

Bottom line is that Russia wants Ukraine back. Ukraine is rich in natural resources that Russia wants. Poroshenko is a Russian toady and will sell out his country.
