IMHO - the ‘something that changed’ - he was diagnosed with depression - probably from seeing so many abused and neglected innocent children. Apparently, his own childhood had been a happy one.
He was probably prescribed anti-depressants by his doctor and ‘voila’ his mind went into a deep freeze.
