Los Angeles (AFP) Early ratings released Monday for ABCs 90th Academy Awards telecast one of the more uneventful shows of recent years stumbled to an-all time low, US media reported.
Overnight returns have the near four-hour show averaging an 18.9 overnight Nielsen rating a number equating roughly to the percentage of Americas estimated 118.4 million households that tuned in according to trade weeklies Variety and the Hollywood Reporter.
That represents a 16 percent drop on last years telecast, which will go down in infamy for its disastrous climax, when the wrong movie was briefly awarded best picture due to a mix-up with the envelopes.
Experts stress that preliminary ratings are not adjusted for time zone differences, meaning the live west coast audience is not accurately reflected in the overnight numbers, as they only measure primetime hours.
The 2017 Academy Awards, which earned a 22.4 overnight rating, ended up drawing 32.9 million viewers. It was the second lowest in Academy history after the 2008 show, hosted by Jon Stewart, pulled in just 31.8 million.

Bring back Billy Krystal!.......................
They dont care. They want to push their politics and agenda and ratings be damned. Although Ill admit that the Oscars in general arent must-watch like it used to be and people dont watch live tv as much anyway as they used to
Hollywoods political aggression feeds on itself. They drive off Republicans and then the only audience thats left is the Dems. Which prompts them to further increase their attacks on Republicans.
You are correct. Especially since cable is being dumped. Window antennas work pretty well, but mine wont pick up ABC. I subscribed to Hulu live Sunday and the WiFi went out halfway thru the broadcast. I dumped Hulu.
Theyll keep going until its just Kimmel talking to the janitor.
And that will be better than what they have now.
Saturday I received season 11 of Gunsmoke, so last night I watched the best show ever on TV.
At this point bringing back David Letterman would be a vast improvement.
Why would I watch people who view my lifestyle, religion and my rights with contempt? I’m a lot of things but a masochist I am not.
My wife worked in Theatre when we were younger, and is generally more tolerant of the political rants than I am.
About 10pm, I joined her on the couch in the living room and asked her if the Oscars weren’t on tonight. Her answer was she had watched about 10 minutes and gotten so turned off by the politics that she had switched it off.
When they’ve lost my wife, they’ve lost America.
Now that Trump has pulled back the curtain, ordinary Americans are seeing East and West Coast celebrity performers for what they are, mere actors playing a part, both on stage and off—role players whose Progressive celebrity political opinions are uninformed by history and just as unreal and fake as the personages they play on stage.
The best picture award went to a movie about an actor in a rubber suit that nobody has seen. And they wonder why they are losing audience.
If they kept it to an hour, handed out only the top acting, directing, and best film awards, the ratings would be huge. As it is, you get an award people care about (best supporting actor or actress) at 15 minutes in, then 2 1/2 hours of categories nobody cares about, featuring people nobody knows, then end up with 45 minutes of the top awards after most people have gone to bed.
Who then attack them for not having enough diversity in the categories, nominations, awardees and presenters.
Who said this isn't entertaining? Next year the host will likely be a tranny illegal alien animal rights, anti-gun activist.
Hah! My prediction came true. I just told hubby the other day that this years Oscars would be the lowest rated in history. Granted, it was a no brainer.
When I was a little girl, it was actually fun to watch to see what all of the glamorous actresses were wearing. Now its just an echo chamber for wildly overpaid narcissists.
He was one of the best hosts.
It was a real good Columbo rerun on antenna TV.
Bring back good movies and light comedic ceremonies without hypocrites preaching about how we’re the problem. But mostly good moves, that would be the first step.
Kibble is just a douche bag political hack, He was not and is not very funny at all........................
