WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican President Donald Trump’s market-jolting promise to slap heavy U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports has earned him praise from an unusual quarter - Democratic lawmakers.

Some Democrats, mainly from Rust Belt states, but from other areas too, hailed the president’s plan for tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum.

It’s interesting to hear them say that because every Democrat I’ve come across on Twitter is acting like a neocon whining about it.

If the Democrats lose the Rust Belt, they cannot win National elections without them.

Free trade is a euphemism-we’re chumps. POTUS is playing a game of chicken with our ‘allies’. Trade partners. They need us more than we need them. Look at when the Japanese tried to take out Harley Davidson. Pat Buchanan advised Reagan(free trader) at the time. Some things you just gotta do.

Just like the tax bill, the establishment hates it, but the people love it.

Free Trade is the ideal, but conditions aren’t always right for it. You should never take any option off of the table, and that includes imposing tariffs.

And we’ve never really had “Free Trade” anyway.

While the Democrats are trying to grab pawns, Trump is setting up a mating attack.

the only countries we should have free trade with are those who don’t pay price supports and are not using what can only be described as slave labor...the last 40 years we have allowed those making there millions off of importation to dictate trade deals. this has been bad for are industrial complex and has destroyed whole industries in the united states. create 1 manufacturing job and other support jobs are created. import and the only job created vis distribution nothing else.

Unless this is very very very selective all it’s going to mean is that whatever that product is if made out of something being subjected to that tax.

It’s going to cost you more.

Plus the country affected will retaliate by putting taxes on stuff we send them and it will cost them more. Usually it hurts our Agri business. Creating inflation and slows down economic development.

It strikes me what Trump is looking at are those thousands of small manufacturers who’ve gone out of business because of the expansion of cheap Chinese imports (of which many were design knock offs) into this country. Remember the Obama quote on manufacturing IS FINISHED IN THE US.

But that was a slow gradual process when it began. Then accelerated by policy. So it should be when as we’re trying to bring small industry back.

Certain key manufacturing and re-manufacturing processes essential to defense should be targeted first and done on a very very limited basis. Because a wholesale approach would wreck our economy.

Good on them - actually rooting for part of America....

I have been wondering, due to all the "economist experts" who have been saying it's "Armageddon", if there isn't an avenue for folks to leverage the current system for huge profits that won't be available to them if the playing field ends up level. Have no idea if it's possible but it strikes me that they doth protest too much....
