non-Jewish WWI German flying ace who painted a Star of David on plane to annoy Hermann Goering

The non-Jewish WWI German flying ace who painted a Star of David on his plane just to annoy Hermann Goering after he made Photos showing how a German fighter pilot painted a Jewish Star of David on his First World War plane just to annoy a racist Hermann Goering have come to light.

Leutnant Adolf Auer wasn't Jewish himself but was upset when commanding officer Goering made anti semitic remarks about his own wingman, Willi Rosenstein.

In revenge, Lt Auer painted the six-pointed Jewish symbol on the side of his Fokker biplane for Goering to see.

The Star of David can clearly be seen on Auer's plane in this photo, taken during the height of World War One

Willy Rosenstein emigrated to South Africa as the Third Reich rose to power in the 1930s.

Despite being a WWI flying ace - claiming nine British kills - he and his family didn't feel safe in Nazi Germany and fled.

In a cruel twist, his son Ernest Rosenstein became a pilot with the South African Air Force and was killed in action while fighting for the Allies in 1945.

While Lt Auer's stunt might have been laughed off in 1917, it could have led to his arrest or even execution in the Second World War.

Auer (pictured sitting in his plane) scored one victory during the First World War and was wounded in action when he was brought down on October 28, 1918 and taken Prisoner of War

Hermann had a great sense of humor. He probably appreciated the joke.

Heh. As an adventurous 19 yr old, I had fun times with the trusty Piper Tri Pacer, weaving through and over wooded pastures near the farm I lived on, chasing an imaginary adversary while mimicking the “in the trees” dogfight, that was George Peppard’s first victory (but unconfirmed) in that movie.

The downside was scrubbing all the smashed bugs off the front of the plane.

Hermann had a great sense of humor.

Yeah, Germans are highly regarded for their sense of humour.

Back in 39, the was a German who did a killer imitation of Charlie Chaplin

Had the whole world in stitches...

To see it was to die...

Busted a gut to get see him in the European theater ...

Closed in Berlin ...

Early in the war the pictured plane might have been filling a fighter-role. But later on that would have been considered an “observation plane”. A rear-seat gunner is a lot of extra weight to be lugging around in a turning fight.

"At the time there was no anti-Jew issue in Germany, it was just Hermann Goering's personal opinion at the time that he clearly carried with him into the Second World War...."

I'm not sure this is entirely correct, having read Goldhagen's seminal Hitler's Willing Executioners, but find this story fascinating.

Little history: my grandfather fought for the Germans in WWI. And for the Americans in WWII. And then Israel shortly thereafter.

He always said he fought on the correct side of both world wars and on the correct side of the slow start of the third.

During World War 1, traitors within Germany were damaging morale by claiming that Jews weren’t fighting or joining and were protected by the Kaiser and/pr parliament. The mentally antisemite and future Hitler ally Ludendorff suppressed a German Army study after it showed that not only were German Jews volunteering at higher rates than ethnic Germans, but they were dying at higher rates. Social Justice Warriors are the foot soldiers of the cultural revolution. Auer was patriot fighting treason
