When are we going to have German Day/French Day/Polish Day or even Italian Day and make a big stinkin deal out of it? Frankly Im sick of it. The original PC day.
The Finns have St. Urho's Day on March 16. It is said that a long, long time ago, a huge swarm of grasshoppers threatened the vineyards and citrus orchards of Finland, but St. Urho heroically drove them out of the country, saving its grapes and its orange, lemon and grapefruit groves. As he chased them out, he yelled, Heinäsirkka, heinäsirkka, mene täältä hiiteen! (grasshopper, grasshopper, go from here to hell).

Finland is an odd but respectable place.

The Irish also have bagpipes. They are not quite the same as Those of the Scots, IIRC. The tune is “The Londonderry Air” if that means anything. There’s a great Barbershop Quartet arrangement, overwhelming when sung by a 100-man chorus. I’ve done it both as a chorus member and as a competing quartet, “The Chairmen of the Chord.”

” Thousands are Sailing “ by the Pogues.
If you are of Irish heritage and have never heard this song I strongly urge you to listen.
It’s beautiful, powerful and quite sad as well. Listen to the lyrics - it’s quite a piece of music.

Best concert I ever attended.
Joe Strummer of the Clash filled in for Shane MacGowin. No announcement, just came out with the rest of the band and said “ I’ll filling in for MacGowin - if that’s a problem - &()*%#&!!”
The place went nuts. I could not believe I was seeing Strummer as I was a huge Clash fan and was too young to have seen them in concert when they were still together.

I remember my grandmother rocking babies while singing that lullaby. I may have sung it to a few babies myself.
