We can’t go on using the Kurds for some interest of our own in Syria. If we are not going to keep Erdogan out of Syria, then we need to betray the Kurds again, as we have before - for our own interest. That would not be my strategy, but we seem to be leaving ourselves no other option.

What Trump should do NOW in my opinion is:

• Immediately and completely end all US official and unofficial governmental aid or supply (food, medicines,weapons, money etc.) to the "opposition"
• Promise sanctions agains the US business of any company that provides these jihadis with weaponry
• Remove American troops from Syrian areas and leave those places for the Kurds or the Syrian army to clean up
• Suspend Turkey from NATO membership. It's already pally with Putin -- let Erdogan see what happens if he embraces the Russian eagle
• Talk with the Iraqis about creating a confederation of Iraq, with southern Shias, Marsh Arabs, Assyrians, Kurds and western Sunnis and Yazidis all getting separate statelets that rule themselves and use a common currency and customs union
• Talk to Assad on a deal where he gets the western, urban part of Syria while the desert to the east of Palmyra goes to the Anbar Sunni statelet. Also for the Kurds to get Rojava. in return he gets US economic help i.e. investment in non-military activities.
• Get the Barzanis and other Kurdish groups to talk to each other and add in Rojava to the Kurdish statelet that is part of the Iraqi confederation
• Let Erdogan fume
• But make the condition that the Kurds will not allow their new statelet to be the base for any military attack on Turkey - get the southern Iraqis to man the border. In return the peshmerga manage between the sunnis and shias.
