In an hour-long meeting with Democrats and Republicans filled with newsworthy comments on gun control Wednesday, President Trump parted ways with members of his own party and accused them more than once of being "petrified" of the National Rifle Association.
"They have great power over you people," the president said to his fellow Republicans. "They have less power over me."
"Some of you are petrified of the NRA," he added. "You can't be petrified."

The president -- who told his supporters Hillary Clinton wanted to take their guns away on the campaign trail -- suggested taking guns "early" from those who are mentally disturbed, and pursuing "due process" in court later, rattling some Republicans.
"I like taking the guns early," the president said. "... Take the guns first, go through due process second."
He flat-out declined to consider adding a provision for concealed carry reciprocity among states, something Republicans have hoped to include in major gun legislation.

He has the media and the late night hosts using his comments as another example of the NRA being "extreme" and "out of touch." He has cut the legs out of pro-Second Amendment members of Congress by calling them "petrified of the NRA." He has played right into the hands of Schumer and Pelosi. Sure, some of them are critical of him for saying he'd eschew "due process" but when the chips are down, they'll grab the opportunity to grab more guns.
Answer: This isn't 4D Chess. This a born and bred NYC man, always rich enough to afford security, with a gaggle of liberal relatives, saying something that he found politically expedient.
And, frankly, if there was a calculation here, it was to try and distract from the reports of Jared Kushner essentially selling White House access.
Yes, he's better than Hillary, but that doesn't mean we should excuse this major attack on both our Second Amendment rights and the one group out there consistently willing to fight for that right.
Scott Adams take is that him saying (paraphrasing) Youre afraid of the NRA to the Republicans in the meeting takes gun control off the table as an issue he can be attacked with in 2020.
Its a very interesting take on things, and sounds accurate. From a guy who understands the Trump dynamic better than almost anyone, who called it for Trump very, very early.
Ill get concerned when I see real action by Trump I perceive as anti-2A. A statement like this I see in terms of Trumps persuasion techniques, as Scott Adams has convinced me to do.
Think the rope-a-dope Trump has played with DACA, for what I think is going on here.
They should be “petrified” of the NRA.
The NRA is We, the people. And we are their boss. Not the other way around, Trump.
I voted for Trump, because he was the anti Washington alternative. If he goes forward with this, I’m done with him. Had the laws we have on the books, both Federally and here in Florida been followed in this case, this nut would not have had this rifle. Instead of tweeting at Sessions, fire him. Stop hiding behind Twitter and step up.

I called it from the moment he answered the first question at the first Republican debate.
But I’m not as famous (I guess?) as Scott Adams. Trump is not pro-gun at all. But he’s not anti-gun either. He’s been a lifelong democrat and really only changed recently and even at that didn’t change for the right reasons. He’s a Northeastern Republican and as I stated in another thread, you’d have to know these people to understand what he is.
But I do know that if Hillary were president right now the entire world would be in shambles.
I hope they are.
The NRA represents the position of a large segment of Trump’s base, and those Republicans in Congress and the Senate as well. It is not something that should be easily ignored.
As they should be.
"I am the NRA!
Anyone remember those ads? The NRA is not some Planned Parenthood organization - the NRA is us - we, the people. AND WE VOTE!
What about the children?
Trump just stepped off the reservation and unless he starts locking up people pretty soon and firing obamaites, I will have nothing to do with him. I already emailed him at his white house (MAGA) website. He can talk about 2nd Amendment abuse but if he acts on it he is toast. Taking away a gun without a hearing????? Bullshit! Most dims suspect Trump of being insane so he’s on thin ice himself!
Maybe the Republicans are not as petrified by the NRA as much as they agree with the NRA.
I hope politicians are afraid - not of the NRA, but of its 5 million members and of the 100 million non-NRA gun owners in the United States. We need to make sure responsible gun owners vote in every election.
What about them?
Hear, hear. Well said. They should be petrified of US!!
Toomey is on Fox n Friends this morning bragging about standing up to the NRA.
They’re screaming at the top of their lungs for action. They’re not going anywhere.
“”””””Toomey is on Fox n Friends this morning bragging about standing up to the NRA.””””
.....while kissing ass of Planned Parenthood.
The NRA is the devil. Get rid of them.
Planned Parenthood kills millions of children. They are fighting for our right to have an abortion.
Forget that. There should be no taking away omg guns *with* a hearing. Judges are the last people who should have the power to decide whether youre fit to own a gun.
Which is another way of saying they are petrified of US.
Which is the way it should be.
Once they reach the representation that the NRA has then maybe they'll count.
