Last year I saw Dunkirk and Murder on the Orient Express because a friend wanted to see them. They were alright.

It has been decades since I watched the Oscars, and it will be decades before I watch them again.

I’ve never watched an oscars show. No desire to see people give each other awards. It’s not like it’s brain surgery.

I go to the movies a couple times a year because it’s a treat for my disabled brother, but that’s mainly because he likes the snacks.
This is how important your “body of work” is, Hollywood jerks. In fact it’s hard to find anything that’s not violent/perverted/vulgar that we can go to.

I think I saw three of them.

None of them “moved” me. And I love going to the movies.

Forgive me, but I didn’t think Dunkirk was that great.

There are tried and true methods that will almost guarantee an Oscar which most producers should follow if they hope to get one.

  1. Portray all whites as racist.
  2. Portray all others as victims.
  3. Portray criminals and death-row murderers as misunderstood victims of circumstance.
  4. Include a lot of gay protagonists of saint-like semi-divine character.
  5. Exaggerate or invent any negative historical events related to Christianity.
  6. Ignore any negative historical events related to Islam.
  7. Portray all Muslims as saint-like as gays (and don't mention what the former does to the latter).
  8. Include an anti-capitalism message.
  9. Include an anti-2nd amendment message.
  10. Include an anti-military message.
  11. Include an anti-American message.

What a loser year and out of touch set of Oscars:

Best Pictures?!

We saw only Dunkirk and that was a really lousy movie. Definitely not traditional Oscar material unless the field is so incredibly bad that it passes as a good movie.

Maybe voting with pocket book, top grossing 2017 movies? None of the Oscar movies are even in the Top 10! Dunkirk made it to 14th and none of the others are even on the list.

  1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  2. Beauty and the Beast
  3. Wonder Woman
  4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.
  5. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
  6. Spider-Man: Homecoming
  7. IT
  8. Thor: Ragnarok
  9. Despicable Me 3
  10. Justice League

Better list. We've actually seen several of these. Marvel is doing well. Among these, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is best and should get best picture nomination. My twin 10 year old boys would like pick the same. Star Wars made more money but was a very bad story and, in my opinion, damaged the franchise. But they didn't ask me.

What did you see, your picks?

Dunkirk’s $188 million box office??? That got it 14th while Star Wars got $619 million box office. My pick Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 got $390 million.

My husband and I waited to rent Dunkirk and were so bored with it I actually fell asleep. Maybe it would have been better on a large screen but still boring.

The fact that there’s not a single original story or idea in the top 10 grossing movies is quite revealing.

The only movie I have a desire to see is the remake of ‘Death Wish’. I haven’t gone out to the movies in a decade but seeing a bunch of dirtbags get what they deserve, sounds like a good way to pass time.

I’m kind of embarrassed to admit I saw Phantom Thread and really liked it. I adore Daniel Day-Lewis not only for his acting and good looks, he seems to keep his personal life and opinions to himself and simply does his job.

Darkest Hour is quite good IMO, but the box office didn’t agree.

...the rest of the field consists of small movies the general public doesn’t care about.

So?

That's what the Golden Globes are for: pictures that folks actually pay to see!

OSCARs are for the 'in' crowd to salivate over, and use to recruit more SJWs using the latest cause célèbre.

I thought Dunkirk was insultingly bad. I-wanted-my-two-hours-back bad

I didn’t like the way they jumped back and forth in “Dunkirk”, because they did’t give you good clues about what they were doing, and I found it hard to keep track of.

Also, the Pilot scenes were just too drawn out, especially the one where the pilot wants to bug out, but feels the draw of duty to shoot down the HE-111 the flies by him on its way to bomb the ship.

My wife didn’t like the fact that they didn’t do enough to distinguish the soldiers from each other, and some of them were pretty similar looking. They didn’t give you enough cues, and you had to keep trying to figure it out.

Saw Dunkirk and Darkest Hour.

Dunkirk was good. Darkest Hour was EXCELLENT. With Churchill as Trump. His own party was trying to defeat his every movie.

Highly recommend by Vaquero. 5 asterisks. *****. If Gary Oldman doesn’t get the lead actor Oscar … it’s political.
