Looking for recommendations for an alternative to register.com for registering my website domain. I've used register.com for many years. Last few years the price was $38 per year. They've added a service fee of $11, which is irritating but not my main beef. I'm pretty convinced their process to choose services and pay is intentionally deceptive. Deselecting items do not trigger a refresh of the total price and when one assumes the appropriate amount is being charged, that is not the case. There was no price reflected during the checkout process and they charged my credit card the full amount, not the items I selected.. I hate liers and cheats, so I will no longer do business with them.
Below is my letter of complaint I just filed with them. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I just renewed my domain @@@@@@@.com
Your interface had three charges listed 1) $38 for the registration, 2) $11 service charge & 3) $30 for Private domain.
I deselected the $30, and unlike other interfaces that having optional charges listed, the price did not refresh - ie I expected the total charge to be reduced to $49, but it did not.
I then proceeded to checkout expecting the appropriate charge to be reflected, but to my surprise, again unlike other commerce websites, it did not present the charged amount at all. I don't think I have ever seen a website taking credit card information and not display the amount to be charged.
I think I now know why. After I checked out, I checked my credit card and saw that you charged me for the $79 instead of the appropriate $49.
I expect to have my account reimbursed the $30 you inappropriately charged me and furthermore, I will research for alternate resources for the next time I need to renew one of my domains.
I use AIT Domains and have for at least 10 years.
I use NamesDirect.com
I use NamesDirect.com
look for godaddy.com coupon codes for domain registration... or namecheap.com
twice
I have 1and1.com, but had an issue with them last year and am looking to change.
Namecheap.com has replaced Godaddy as the often-recommended place for domain registration. This is per the technical readership of “Hacker News”, which is a popular forum for IT/entrepreneur articles.
I use 1 and 1 for my domain. I’ve been very happy with them, and they’re very cheap too.
The last I checked, Namecheap would be under $20 for the registration with an additional $2.88 charge for domain privacy. Coupon codes will reduce your first year cost even more.
i use godaddy because of the their online management features and they have always been knowledgeable and helpful the few times i have to call. they may not be the cheapest, but cheapest is rarely the best, particularly with respect to cost effectiveness ...
Google. No gimmicks, privacy included.
As usual, lots of good advice here. Thanks to everyone for your input.
I’ve heard good things about hover.com
It seems that I may have jumpedt he gun on my claims, though I believe a poorly designed web interface led to my incorrect conclusion. I may have been incorrect in my statement about register.com. However, based upon comments in this thread, I will still transfer my domain registration to another provider because I think their prices are significantly higher compared to others. Thanks again for your information.
