Does college turn people into liberals?

Does going to college make students into political liberals?

Conservative activists have claimed that universities brainwash students and indoctrinate them into believing a liberal ideology. The line of reasoning goes like this: Liberal college professors tell students “what to think,” and “what to think” is that conservatives and their positions are to be dismissed. A state lawmaker in Iowa has even suggested universities consider political affiliation in connection with hiring practices in order to balance out the distribution of political representation on the faculty.

Conservatives on campus feel outnumbered, given that about 60 percent of faculty identify as politically liberal. This imbalance supposedly hurts research, stifles open discourse and impairs overall education. Missing in this debate, however, is large-scale empirical evidence on how going to college actually impacts students’ attitudes.

It tries, first through propaganda and peer pressure, and if that fails, through coercion and force.

Absolutely not. A strong character and upbringing are the key factors. Conservatism is rooted in common sense, and anyone weak enough to be swayed by liberal ideas is someone that lacks the right tools to know right from wrong.

Saying college makes one liberal is like saying having a job makes one conservative.

Maybe it created frustration with the current political system because they graduate with significant debt and a useless degree.

“Conservatives on campus feel outnumbered, given that about 60 percent of faculty identify as politically liberal.”

That’s BS. For every point it’s below 98%, I’ll eat a Stetson hat.

Unless you’re going to become a doctor, engineer, or lawyer, college is a waste of money. You can educate yourself for very little money.

I recommend most dudes should learn a trade. Lineman is number one to me.

The article completely ignores *what* is taught.

There are a great deal of false assumptions about reality that are taught in Universities.

Its sometimes overt, but often times its just the social milieu - and it occurs by osmosis.

Hell, just living in Washington DC turns you leftist. You can’t avoid it.

College is a wrap up for the indoctrination that began watching PBS.

“Critical Theory was essentially destructive criticism of the main elements of Western culture, including Christianity, capitalism, authority, the family, patriarchy, hierarchy, morality, tradition, sexual restraint, loyalty, patriotism, nationalism, heredity, ethnocentrism, convention and conservatism.”

http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/viewSubCategory.asp?id=552

“And, a new Dark Age is exactly what we are in. In such situations, the record of history is unequivocal: either we create a Renaissance—a rebirth of the fundamental principles upon which civilization originated—or, our civilization dies.”

Exactly. It did for one of my daughters but failed for the other. The former is a smart girl and a people pleaser type of personality. She tries really hard to get along with everyone. The latter is extremely smart but short on people skills. She doesn’t care what people think and comes up with her own opinion on everything. She’s a huge fan of Klavan, Ben Shapiro, etc.

“Maybe it created frustration with the current political system because they graduate with significant debt and a useless degree.”

A decade or two ago I read an article claiming that this is always a recipe for trouble, and citing a few historical examples.

Anybody else remember that?

Being that it’s not been all that long since I graduated my last degree (December 2007), I can say that, especially if you’re a white (or appear to be white) male, or worse yet, a Jew, at least APPEARING to be extremely liberal is an essential survival tactic.

Only 60% of college professors are liberal??? For that to be true, the other 40% must be outright Marxists.
