Could public schools come up with at least two volunteers from staff, including support staff,who would be willing to get trained and carry to protect the kids?
If not, it’s truly sad and pathetic.
Why not provide incentive pay for those who carry?
Hear are my suggestion(s):
For High Schools: Military recruiters on site. Armed them, but only tell key officials.
* allow local police/sheriff to have satellite office in school (just having a cop car parked outside could help as a deterrent)
* Security cameras at all ingress/egress points and hallways (no brainer).
* When school starts: doors locked from the inside. Must be buzzed in (pre-appointment strongly suggested). This is already the case at many schools.
* Armed teachers, trained to use firearms. The better trained gets higher pay can is stationed closest to the entry and exit points.
* Develop emergency exits strategies that DONT rely on shelter-in-place (i.e. sit and wait for someone to come kill you) which is the current strategy design to keep cops safe while attempting to clear the building.
* if a potential perp makes terrorist threats (that’s what they are called in many states), file report with LOCAL police. Take copy of police report to all local gun shops in the area. I’d even consider alerting the local news media.
You may not like it but: Metal detectors work in inner-city schools (notice few to no mass shootings?) I don’t advocate here due to costs.
And as you can see, except for the military recruiters, there’s NO federal involvement needed.
