National Space Defense Center Goes Operational --in Colorado

Synopsis:

Deep within the massive Schriever Air Force Base near Colorado Springs, CO, The National Space Defense Center is finally gone operational.

Their mission?

To keep American military and spy satellites safe while in orbit. Vice President Mike Pence was photographed in the ultra-secret center which surveils space around planet Earth 24 hours a day with a staff of 230.

The Center's Director, Col. Todd Brost, told a Colorado Springs newspaper, The Gazette: "This is not an Air Force unit. It's not really even a Department of Defense unit."

However, he did not say exactly to whom or what the unit belonged.

Our best guess is it is a super-secret unit of the US Space Command - and ownership falls somewhere between the intelligence community and DOD.

"Now, you have an intelligence person sitting next to an (satellite) operator.

That partnership with the intelligence community is crucial," said Col. Brost.

The center started spinning up in late 2015 as increasing threats arose from China, N. Korea, and Iran against the massive American space presence.

So secretive is the new unit, that airmen have long called it "Area 52".

Here's the official Air Force announcement

National Space Defense Center transitions to 24/7 operations

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. (AFNS) -- Less than a year after changing the name of the Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center to the National Space Defense Center, the NSDC transitioned to 24/7 operations on Jan. 8, 2018, marking a significant step for the expanding, interagency team focused on protecting and defending the nation's critical space assets.

"This is a significant milestone," said Gen. Jay Raymond, U.S. Strategic Command's Joint Force Space Component commander and commander of Air Force Space Command. "We have officially transitioned the NSDC from an experiment to a functioning 24/7/365 operations center focused on protecting and defending the space domain. This advancement immediately expands our space situational awareness and bolsters our readiness - both of which are absolutely critical to maintaining space superiority."

The NSDC is a partnership organization, strongly supported by both the Defense Department and Intelligence Community, that develops and improves U.S. ability to rapidly detect, warn, characterize, attribute and defend against threats to our nation's vital space systems. The NSDC directly supports space defense unity of effort and expands information sharing in space defense operations among the DoD, National Reconnaissance Office and other interagency partners.

Now why do have an uneasy feeling that much of what will eventually result from this has been a TV Show???

Wonder how many kabillions of tax dollars has been spent on this. Does the old NORAD facility exist? Could it have been upgraded?

I didn’t watch the video, but I feel like they are glossing over something.

Surveillance for space threats is fine. This Colorado system is not really unique — “special” in certain ways, I’m sure, but we always watch the skies. For space debris or other things.

But what do you do if you see something? That’s the missing piece. That goes beyond surveillance. I imagine we have something up our sleeve, but we very clearly don’t want to talk about it.

My nephew is stationed at Schriever AFB. He answered questions from VP Pence. My nephew said the VP was a smart guy, well briefed.

There are stories and a few more pictures of VP Pence’s visit to Schriever AFB, on the net. I suppose there are satellite photos, if you know what to look for.

It used to be called the Space Combat Center. There is plenty of activity and always has been. Been run by guard personnel.

NORAD still exists and is functioning, however it is not nearly big enough to handle what Schriever does.
