~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Pine Bluff Arsenal, Arkansas

The Pine Bluff Arsenal (PBA) is a United States Army installation located in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. PBA is one of the six Army installations in the United States which stores chemical weapons. PBA supplies specialized production, storage, maintenance and distribution of readiness products, and delivers technical services to the Armed Forces and Homeland Security.

PBA also designs, manufactures and refurbishes smoke, riot control, and incendiary munitions, as well as chemical/biological defense operations items. It serves as a technology center for illuminating and infrared munitions and is also the only place in the Northern Hemisphere where white phosphorus munitions are filled. Its Homeland Security mission includes first-responder equipment training and surveillance of prepositioned equipment.

PBA satisfies the Department of Defense’s peace time and replenishment requirements by providing the U.S. and allied forces with critical products and services that are primarily unavailable from other sources.

PBA also provides specialized training and logistical support for the Department of Homeland Security. PBA’s core primary missions include: conventional ammunition, chemical biological defense, engineering and technical support, mobile and powered systems support and base operations support to numerous tenant activities. Also a conventional depot, PBA has 1.3 million square feet of storage capacity with over 75,000 tons of inventory.

PBA has the capability to produce, renovate and store over 60 different conventional ammunition products ranging in caliber from 440 mm to 175 mm. 85 percent of these products are produced only at PBA. The Arsenal’s specialties include production of munitions containing payloads for smoke (signaling, spotting and obscuration), non-lethal, riot control, incendiary, illumination and infrareduses.

Smoke payload capabilities include white phosphorous, red phosphorous, terephathalic acid (TA) and hexaclorethane (HC) for both munitions and grenades. PBA is the only facility with the capability to fill white phosphorous munitions. The Arsenal is capable of producing munitions designed to provide friendly forces the capability to stop, confuse, disorient or momentarily deter a potential threat without use of deadly force.

Chemical/biological defense is a growing field of expertise at PBA. The Arsenal’s leadership in the field of protective mask fabrication, repair and recertification dates back to the late 1970s. Today, PBA is the Army’s sole facility for the repair and rebuild of the M17 series,
M9A1, M24, M25A1 and M40 masks as well as the M20 breathing apparatus. The Arsenal fabricates, fits, and tests chemical biological protective filters in various sizes and configurations.

CB Defense industrial capabilities at PBA include the manufacture of personnel and equipment decontamination kits; repair, renovation and testing of chemical protective clothing; and the rebuild and calibration of defensive chemical test equipment. Since the nation’s increased focus on homeland defense, PBA has initiated programs for the training of civilian first responders and providing CB Defense technical equipment assistance and training for local jurisdictions.

I was stationed there 94-01, PBA is a great duty station if you love to fish and hunt, and love a small military community (Around 100 soldiers). Most soldiers did not enjoy there assignment there, the suicide rate was very high for such a small post. PBA was referred to as the Army arm pit among active duty soldiers, and most would do anything possible to get out of assignment orders.

Howdy, radu!

Hope y’all had a good day today. We had several good chances for rain that passed right over us without letting go of a drop. *sigh*

Howwdy, LUV!

It was a niiiiiice day today though it would have been nicer without WIND. But we had some sunshine here and there and 75 wonderful degrees. They call for 82 tomorrow!

I checked the radar this afternoon and saw y’all were being skirted by rain. That stinks!!

Howdy, Kathy.

Hope it’s been a relatively easy Monday. Or have they thrown stuff at y’all to gum things up again?

Howdy radu!

It has been real cold during the days, 30's, but sunny which brightens things up!

I did venture out to shop and get a new pair of shoes and other misc. stuff and stopped off to see son and the pups. The 'lil wild man is a bit less hyper now but he sure enjoys attention, can't stand it when I pet the other dogs, LOL.

Your day AOK?

it does stink! It’s been at least 2 months since we’ve gotten enough to actually help.

Ooooooo...great that you had nice warm weather today and will tomorrow! Maybe the wind will die down and you can actually enjoy your trilp to the gracery store!

Supposed to get really chilly here on Wednesday. Maybe I can sleep then. LOL!

Hi Janey!

I watched the movie "Sully" last night, (have you seen it?), great movie, Tom Hanks is a big lib but a superb actor and the movie was quite riveting.

My BIL is also a retired Air Force and airline pilot and he said it was done very well.
