Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, received a lukewarm welcome at the start of his official India visit, with some claiming he had been "snubbed" by New Delhi over his support of Sikh separatists.
After landing on Saturday, Mr Trudeau was received by a junior agricultural minister and only by district officials when he visited the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra a day later.
His welcome stands in stark contrast to heads of foreign governments who have been personally received at New Delhis airport by prime minister Narendra Modi himself, known for his warm public embraces with world leaders.
Mr Trudeau was also not afforded the usual fanfare of being greeted by the provincial chief minister of northern Uttar Pradesh state, where Agra is located.
Diplomatic sources said by "downgrading" these subtle arrangements, Modis Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government was "indicating" its displeasure over Mr Trudeau attending an event organised by Sikhs in Toronto last May that featured posters and flags demanding the Sikh homeland of Khalistan.
Canada is home to 4.68 million Sikhs, comprising 1.4 per cent of its population and a small, but influential number of them had financially and politically backed the 15-year long Sikh insurgency in northern Punjab state for an independent homeland of Khalistan or Land of the Pure.
The Sikh separatist movement claimed over 80,000 lives before it was crushed around 1993, but much to New Delhis chagrin small groups of Sikhs in Canada have continued to support the creation of Khalistan.
In a running diplomatic battle that has resulted in turbulent ties between the two countries, India has accused successive Canadian administrations, including Mr Trudeaus, of backing these Sikh groups, known as Khalistanis. Many such Sikh activists had also acquired political importance, adding to bilateral seesaw relations between India and Canada.

Nothing says 'I am dumber than a doorpost' more than landing on the tarmac of an airport in India dressed up some phony Hinduism religious garb with a bindi decoration on your forehead in a country were religion is as complex, diversified and polarizing as it is in India.
Chalk up another foo-pah for Justin Not Ready Trudeau, that former primary school teach currently engaged in 'on the job' training to be a full time Prime Minister.
Justin Trudeaus unusual India visit raises eyebrows, criticised by Canada watchdog
Check out the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs.
LOL... with theme music.
My detailed research pulled up this Wiki stat after I labored for about five seconds: “Canadian Sikhs number roughly 468,670 people”
Lol!!
They look like a “ Visit India” poster
Not the first family of Canaduh
He should have been carrying a hockey stick
Talk about cultural appropriation.
lol - that depends if you have the “correct” point of view ;p
In this instance, the left will say it’s incredibly wise to respect the culture of those that you’re visiting. It’s nuanced you see.
Otherwise you’re bang on - you’re a “culturally appropriating” racist.
They aren’t a bad looking family but yes the outfits make them look absurd.
You're so lucky to have a vast research department with an unlimited time budget allocated solely to discovery of this otherwise unobtainable statistical data. How can a mere "Professional Journalist" compete with you? Or for that matter, how can an entire trillion dollar industry compete with you?
The depth of your statistical research provides an analytic evaluation as an added benefit. From your data we can conclusively prove "Journalists" provide fake news through outright stupidity as well as their previously proven rabid liberal bias.
How patronizing of them.
What a dork.
The Indian PM was too busy laughing his ass off to attend.
The Sikh’s are mostly grouped in the Toronto and Vancouver areas, so hold significant sway over a number of federal voting districts (ridings as we call them). The Liberals have been cultural shills since old man Trudeau opened the floodgates in the late 1960s. They literally would have someone meet newcomers at the airports and get them to sign Liberal memberships the moment they were in Canada. The Liberals were big supporters of the Tamil Tigers terrorist group when it served their purpose, again to curry favour (pardon the pun) with this ethnic group in a handful of ridings. The “Conservative” Party started to play this came in the mid 2000s, by reaching out to ethnic voters primarily in the Indian and Chinese communities, but never to the cynical levels of the Liberals.
Bieber is taken more seriously on the world stage.
Laziness Trumps stupidity and evil.
Journalists are accustomed to being fed press releases they re-print without checking. But they are now forbidden to re-print Trump press releases.
So the are overjoyed when they receive a Trudeau press release they can print without questioning. It is very possible that the original sin was in the Trudeau PR department.
Ummm, no, not even close.
I think they misplaced a decimal point. The highest claim for the Sikh population in Canada is 468,000, which is 1.4% of the population.
That said, potato face Trudeau is a complete idiot who lives in a bubble. If Canadians can come to their senses in two years he will be a bad dream.
Suddenly, I’m think about “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
Why doesn’t Trudeau ride up and down the runway on an elephant?
My opinion of The Indian Prime Minister has risen a few notches by him not showing up.
A little side-note, it is very easy for both Indians and Chinese to obtain Canadian Citizenship. The Canadians do not worry about being over run by them because many of those new Canadian citizens use their Canadian citizenship to come to the US and work in the US.
I’ve worked in IT beside many Indians and Chinese who are naturalized Canadians. Some work here legally. Many come as tourists and work here illegally. Of course, there are also many European Canadians who work in the US, some legally, some not.
“think” should be “thinking” (which apparently I wasn’t.
