Isn’t it amazing how good a selection Reiner was for the Meathead character? He didn’t have to act—all he had to do was be himself.

Unfortunately they wanted Meathead to be the one people in the audience identified with and cheered for but not only was the character wrong on every issue, Reiner himself portrayed him as an angry, condescending and arrogant jerk. So everybody disliked him. Not what they were going for.
