if it’s 100 miles from Alca and buildings are shaking in MexiCity some 300(?) miles away, I wonder how Alcapulco is doing right now? Wish some more news would come in.

Prayers for the victims.

All these illegal construction workers here should take themselves back to help out at home.

Reuters has a short bit up:

“Oaxaca’s civil protection service said no damage had been reported so far.
“In Mexico City, tall buildings swayed for more than a minute as seismic alarms sounded throughout the city, and tremors were felt as far away as Guatemala to the south.
“Television images showed thousands of people in the streets in the city center, where crowds had gathered to celebrate the Chinese New Year.”

I have a friend in Oaxaca and he said some decorative things have fallen in some of the older historic buildings but so far no reports of major damage. Hope the aftershocks aren’t bad!

I will say this though, it seems the rate of decline of ground motion doesn’t seem to be dampened by distance down there, to the degree it is up here.

Another-words, at 100 miles there’s still a large magnitude shake.

Up here at 100 miles the quakes can been quite minimal.

I would imagine it’s relatively OK. 100 miles away from the epicenter of a 7.5 is a nice safety margin. Of course they build crappy substandard structures down there so who knows.

I just spotted it on the four seismographs (INCN, MDJ, MAJO &BJT) bracketing the Nork Nuke test site. Looks like a 7.2 or so...

IIRC, this epicenter isn't too far from the big one on the west coast of Mexico a few weeks ago... Not good. Especially for those poor folks who were just beginning to rebuild...

We would have similar shock transmissions distances. We simply haven’t experienced a 7.2 recently...

Here's what it looked like on the other side of the Pacific:

BJT - Beijing (Chi)
MDJ = Mudanjiang (Chi)
INCN = Incheon (SK)
MAJO = Matsushiro (Jpn)

Thank you! He’s attending a conference there and I was planning to be there too, except that something came up at the last minute. Guess I was lucky!

I experienced four or five 6.5 to 7.0 (roughly) earthquakes in Southern California during the 90s. The Northridge quake damaged property in a straight line from Northridge (some say Canoga Park) down to Long Beach.

Even blocks away, there was very little serious damage in some cases. Across the valley some 30 miles away, there was almost no damage.

Down in Mexico quakes take place and there is some rather heavy damage at times up to 100-200 miles away.

This may be a misperception LINK) on my part, but I believe I've seen it a number of times.
