The first reports of what would come to be known as the Mandan tribe began to trickle out from French explorers in the region of the Missouri River in present-day North and South Dakota in the early 1700s. These natives were said to have rather fair skin and to have red or blonde hair and blue or grey eyes, and indeed especially the women were purportedly so Nordic in appearance that if it were not for their clothing they were said to be nearly indistinguishable from whites.

I don't know what to make of this either. I grew up with descendants of the Mandans.

There are no full-blooded Mandans anymore, and not many with Mandan blood period.

I don't recall seeing blue eyes as a youth, but who at that age is looking for racial characteristics? We were just kids being kids.

I heard about it later when I went off to school...supposedly some at the time even proposed (foolishly) that the Mandans might be the Lost Tribe of Israel.

Hard to say about eye color. White traders may have been amongst the Mandans and others very, very early.

No matter what, Warren could have some tiny amount of Indian blood, and still have blue eyes.

The telling fact remains that she refuses to take a genetic test.

I have. A college friend of mine was seven-eights Native American. Had one Irish grandparent from whom she got red hair and blue eyes. Her sisters looked unmistakably Native American, in other words, they didn't look anything like Elizabeth Warren.

My parents and my four siblings have very blue eyes. According to lore, my dad’s great-grandsomething was American Indian from whatever tribe was in the area of Gold, PA. (Iroquois Nation, but not sure of tribe — probably Seneca.) I was skeptical, although I thought I could see it in Grandpa’s and Dad’s profiles.

In ‘66, Dad was driving me to college from Ohio to NY Southern Tier, and we passed through an Indian Reservation (cheap gas). I was waiting in a long line with Dad, waiting to use the restroom. The Indian proprietor came back and walked us to the front of the line. Dad asked why he did that and he said, “We take care of our own.” Dad asked, “How did you know?” The guy replied, “Oh; we can tell.” That’s when I figured the lore was true. I also figured it’s good for bathroom cuts in certain parts of the country.

Obviously the blue-eyed blond recessive gene in all the other ancestors was a strong one.

My maternal grandpa was 100 percent Yaqui Indian and he had stunningly beautiful blue eyes.
