I agree that Bob was talking about the primary. George Ryan was a Republican, and Glen Proshard was a Democrat, so they didn’t run against each other in the primary.

Oddly enough, its the 20th anniversary of the "conservative downstate RAT win the Dem primary because the Chicago vote was split" and the elements are in place again this year. Bob Daiber from Madison county is the lone downstate RAT running for Governor against Chicago RATs Tio Hardiman, Chris Kennedy, Daniel Biss, and J.B. Pritzker.

Daiber is playing up the whole Poshard thing from '98, but I doubt he'll be able to replicate what Poshard pulled off. Pritzker's billions have pretty much made all the other Dems also-rans, and I also don't think Daiber is as socially conservative as Poshard, or as well known (Poshard was a pretty popular Congressman in southern Illinois at the time)

exactly ... but if you pulled a ‘rat ballot to vote poshard for gov, you could not vote for fitzgerald for senate ... THAT’s the point bob was making. many conservative/pub voters pulled rat ballots to do just that; hence, fitz won without getting the votes from a lot of his traditional base
