GOP Voters Could Decide [California] Governor’s Race

The Public Policy Institute of California poll revealed a tight race for governor between Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa with nary a Republican in sight. Yet, in the end it may be Republican voters who could choose the next governor because of California’s top two primary system.

With the June primary four months away, Newsom tops the PPIC poll with 23% support from likely voters with Villaraigosa closing in at 21%. Third position also belongs to a Democrat with state Treasurer John Chiang claiming 9% just ahead of the first Republican in the poll, Assemblyman Travis Allen at 8%.

If Newsom and Villaraigosa hold their positions through the primary Republicans will not have a candidate in the general election and Republican voters who choose to vote for governor would have to pick between the top two Democrats. In a close race, those Republican voters—who make up 26% of registered voters– could be decisive.

In the new PPIC poll, Villaraigosa edges out Newsom among Republican voters 6% to 4%. The gap is wider when the ideology of voters is measured. Conservative voters go for Villaraigosa over Newsom 15% to 6%. Moderates also favor the former L.A. mayor over the former S.F. mayor, 24% to 18%.

Lots of time left and big campaigns for the primary and general election to come and try to move the voters of all persuasions. But, ironically, Republicans who have felt left out of the political world in Democratic-controlled California may have the final say in who gains the state’s top job.

I didn’t know Republicans were permitted to vote in California. Don’t you have to be an illegal?

Republicans will not have a candidate in the general election

It is hard to believe that this is even constitutional but the Republican party evidently did not to stop it or even take it to court (as far as I know).

The Democrat have taken every proposition they did not like to court and had them over turned on the grounds they were not constitutional, yet here we are, half the voters disenfranchised and the Republicans do nothing.

And if they wanted to, Republican voters could choose the mayor in Chicago, just by crossing over in the donkey primary to pick between the radical white candidate (currently Tiny Dancer Emanuel), the radical Hispanic candidate, and the radical Black candidate - the city remains a sh*th*le in any case.

It’s done. A Governor Newsom will be unable to get Calif. out of it’s s—thole. It would hurt him down the road to the WH.

I’m thinking it must be a lot less than half the voters in CA if the first Republican to appear polls in 4th place.

I heard a radio ad for Cox just the other day. He’s got mine and the Mrs vote.

Plus, there are usually other measures on the ballot. Up or down, sometimes they’re even important.

Newsom’s the nutty guy who likes to simulate sex acts on a microphone during press interviews, right?

They wanted one party rule by setting up the “jungle primary” system - only one party to choose from in most races there now. That dampens GOP turnout to bring harm to races where Republicans actually are able to run - which affects US House races, etc. For example, there were two Democrats facing off against each other for the Senate race in 2016 - hardly reason for GOP voters to turnout in much of the state. Another part of this scam was probably to create a situation where Republicans would routinely lose the meaningless and essentially non-existent “national popular vote” to create a media talking point that the Electoral College should be eliminated.

The only way around this may be for conservatives to actually run as Independents or even Democrats - an electorate conditioned to automatically not listen to and vote against someone with an “R” beside their name might actually consider voting for an Independent or Democrat espousing the same views. I bet if conservatives started winning under the Democrat mantle that would prompt them to do away with this system.

That may be the answer. Certainly liberals register in high Republican areas as Republicans and pretend to be conservative until they are elected.

Vote for the worst possible candidate. The sooner California destroys itself, the sooner we can rebuild it.

If we have to choose between two Democrats in November, I won’t cast a vote for governor. I hope every Republican does the same.
