Maria Barrancas stood in the backyard of her mother-in-laws home, alone but for a pig and some hens. It had been about a week since she packed up her life in Gardena and left for Mexico with her partner and their two children.
There, in the small, dusty Sinaloa town of El Aguaje, the isolation hit her. Her three older children were still in California. She was in a country she hardly remembered, having left for the U.S. 32 years ago at age 15.
She broke down in tears but wiped them away before walking inside to her family. She didnt want them to see that she was afraid.
Back in their two-bedroom apartment in Gardena, Barrancas and Ricardo Madrigal had dreamed of one day owning a home nearby. They made money buying and selling used cars. Every other day, Barrancas would see her then-21-year-old daughter, Cynthia, and granddaughter Hailee, who lived five minutes away.
But all that felt stable came unmoored when Donald Trump was elected president. Barrancas watched as Trump said he did not want people like her and Madrigal in a country he boasted hed make great again, in part, by getting rid of them.
The couple were in the country illegally. Jobs already felt hard to come by, and the anti-immigrant climate added to their stress.
They decided to leave in August, heading for a border they had long avoided a process some refer to as self-deporting.
In Tijuana, their daughter, Luz, then 6, clung to them, sobbing to go back. Barrancas held her tight and told her everything would be OK.
Were starting a new life today, she said.

Wow, the boo-hoo stories are coming hard and fast now.
“Every other day, Barrancas would see her then-21-year-old daughter, Cynthia, and granddaughter Hailee, who lived five minutes away.”
Easy solution.
This is about the third article today of heartwarming family reunification taking place - OUTSIDE of America.
Cue the boo-hoo girl.
Yep.
Criminals should never profit from their crimes. This time around, justice was delayed, but I’m glad it finally caught up with her. Now deport the rest - deport all illegals, no exceptions.
Oh the tears... NOT. Cheers she is gone!
No kidding. They thought they could get away with thumbing their noses at the law ... indefinitely. They were wrong.
They could ask Kathleen Ann Soliah how that works out for Americans ...
Blame Schumer. Schumer rejected Trump’s offer.
SNOWY!
And stay out.
ANOTHER hard luck case.
Where are the ‘dreamer’ murdering cases...?
I heard Ann Coulter make a great point- You don’t create road safety laws for using the example of the father rushing his baby to the hospital...
Those are EXCEPTIONS.
But the media always shows us the worst case examples.
Don’t you love how these people don’t give a crap for their own country? Lousy “citizens” no matter where they decide to leech.
LATimes...How about the stories of drunk illegals killing police officers??? How about the stories of illegals raping 5 year old kids??? How about the stories of MS-13 murderers??? How about....
Oh, hell...Never mind...You don’t care....
She did the right thing and finally left. So?
They miss all the free stuff....
Nice article. She had a romanticized view of Mexico but now she has a realistic view and it aint pretty. Maybe all the DACAs need a refresher as to why they are here and not there. Then maybe they can start realize the similarities between those governments and the Dims.
