Wouldn’t a few nukes be cheaper and more effective?

I wonder how many bombs can be dropped simultaneously?

I think that depends more on the precision weapons being employed than on the aircraft. Certainly the B-52 is capable of dropping a lot of ordnance relatively quickly.

If the precision munitions are laser guided then it depends on the laser illumination system. You need enough separation between the bombs to shift the laser illuminator to the next target, with the next munition still being high enough that the new target is in it's seeker cone, and it has enough altitude to make any corrections. So that would mean staging the munitions out with a fair gap between them. You could use multiple lasers and put multiple weapons in the air - but that implies some kind of "channeling" - different frequencies or different modulations on a laser. I'm not even sure if we do that - yet. That would also imply more coordination between the illumination source (ground?) and aircraft - agreeing on which possible frequency/modulation is in use.

Autonomous precision weapons - say GPS guided, are easier. They go to their target independently so in theory you could dump them out like "dumb iron bombs." However, that knowing where to go means you've got to communicate to the bomb it's GPS target coordinates. I don't know if that's done via an RF link, a set of contacts on the seeker, or what. So that implies a pause in unloading as each munition is programmed with it's target.

Like you, at the time I read an article or two that mentioned special forces on horseback, then nothing more. I didn’t know about the book until the credits rolled in the movie. Now on my reading list.

The bravery of those men is beyond comprehension. They were essentially sent on a suicide mission five weeks after 9/11 and all came home. So few here at home know what our soldiers and warriors do for us every day. Even worse are those that despise those who keep us safe.

Dunno, but during the Vietnam unpleasantness, a wiring defect caused one to drop all its load at the same instant.

The air crew reported that the air frame made an interesting TWANG noise...

...no reports of the drop as experienced on the ground.

The same week an American company launches a sports car into space - we're Americans - we can do freaking anything!!

We finally got a flying car.

Sounds good.

I hope we can root out and destroy the dozens of terrorist cells that have been ‘sleeping’ here since the early 2000s.

That is never discussed (publicly at least), for some reason. Maybe it’s all happening under the radar.

I remember seeing a story at the time; the Special Forces requested a supply drop. Among the supplies requested were saddles.

Laser guided by ground troops, gps??

Don't be silly. Bombs guided by some 11 year old in Nevada via his i-phone.

When I was there in ‘11 the Marines had PB’s within 10 feet of poppy fields in central Helmand.

They weren’t allowed to take them out.

Why? Afghan President Karsi’s brother was the biggest drug lord in Afghanistan (reportedly).

I wonder how many bombs can be dropped simultaneously?

During the Vietnam War they were loaded with up to 78 750 lb bombs for "Arc Light" parties.

I didn’t have time to watch the whole video but most of the video is the first minute or two is old. The B-52s shown are aircraft that have been retired for decades.

The color video inside the bay is a release on a target island north of Guam.

The B-52 can only carry one MOP in the bay and like none on the wings.

Here ya go...
