Florida Bill Seeks to Stop Arrests Of Injured Immigrant Workers
NPR ^ | February 7, 2018 | Michael Grabell & Howard Berkes

A new bill under consideration by Florida lawmakers would stop insurance companies from dodging workers compensation payouts by aiding in the arrest and deportation of unauthorized immigrants who are injured on the job.

Legislators and advocates have been pushing for the measure since last summer, when ProPublica and NPR documented more than 130 cases in which immigrants who had suffered legitimate workplace injuries were flagged to law enforcement agencies by their employers' insurers. The workers faced felony fraud charges for using a fake ID when they sought medical care. Meanwhile, the insurers often avoided paying the workers' compensation benefits legally due to all employees injured at work.

Some workers were detained by federal immigration agents and deported without getting proper medical treatment for serious injuries.

They should be paid what they are owed.

And then, deported.

They should be paid what they are owed.....Maybe they should pay back what they owe the taxpayers just for the enforcement actions?

Enact a federal law that illegal aliens working illegally in the USA can only sue their employees and that any policy is null and void if the worker is working illegally.

All posters need to read your post. The Dems have proposed a bill. It’s not law. It’s a Dem proposal, period.

Agree, Florida is not California yet... However, I posted this as another example of the the fake news conflating immigrants with illegal aliens.

So people who are ILLEGALLY inside and working in the US (and most likely taking cash for wages or using fraudulent documents) are eligible for Workman’s Comp payments?

How can it be illegal...or immoral...for any individual or corporate entity to report individuals who may be engaging in a crime?

Enact a federal law that illegal aliens working illegally in the USA can only sue their employers and that any workplace insurance policy is null and void if the worker is working illegally.

I am pretty sure the 'insurance' referred to is workmans comp that is partially funded by employers and partially funded by taxpayers. I would suspect that many employers pay illegals under the table and as such pay no workmans comp on them. As well, some employers knowingly hire illegals that are using false documentation. Finally, probably the minority of employers, unwitting hire illegal aliens with false documentation. Regardless, in my humble opinion, the bill is just another example of Leftist attempts to circumvent Immigration Law and prevent illegals from being identified and deported.

As far as legal & financial issues, I think all lawbreakers including employers should be prosecuted in cases such as those the bill attempts to sweep under the carpet...

Not legally; however, under the delusion of Leftism, illegal aliens are illegible for everything 'undocumentedly'.

Leftists only have a problem in matters such as this when Americans demand documenting the crimes of illegal aliens & documenting the illegal alien criminals BECAUSE when such is documented it makea it very very hard to pretend illegal aliens are not the beautiful, lawful, hardworking, moral & honest people Leftists repeatedly tell everyone they are...

That’s B.S..

If you are injured on the job, the employer is responsible.

Don’t care if you are legal or illegal.
