UPS said Tuesday that it is making a "strategic cross-border investment" that serves a manufacturing region across New Mexico, Texas and part of Mexico.
The Atlanta-based logistics giant announced development of a new package operations center to support commercial and residential commerce in the growing North America Borderplex. The $41 million facility in El Paso, Texas adds 153,000 square feet of new processing capacity to the UPS Smart Global Logistics Network for automotive, electronics, appliances and machinery producers, according to a news release. It is expected to begin operating in late 2018.
The investment stretches into Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, which UPS said is an important trade lane for cross-border commerce and features world-class manufacturing infrastructure.
El Paso is the gateway to one of the most important industrial corridors in the U.S. Mexico trade lane. UPS is one of the pistons helping drive the economic growth engine in this community, said Craig Wiltz, president of UPSs Red River District that includes Texas and Oklahoma, in the release. The new building positions UPS to increasingly support U.S. companies growing their cross-border commerce, as well as better serve the rapidly changing business and residential needs of our customers in West Texas.
UPS has announced plans for 16 new and expanded U.S. facilities that will create more than 8,650 full- and part-time positions.
"The UPS expansion and new state-of-the-art facility near the El Paso International Airport speaks to the strategic growth our community is experiencing, said El Paso Mayor Dee Margo in the release.
UPS said the new facility will also support its Trade Direct Cross Border service, an integrated solution that simplifies the cross border shipping process by allowing shipments to bypass distribution centers, shipping directly to retail stores or end consumers across the Mexico/U.S./Canada borders.
Mexico is one of the United States most important trading partners, ranking second among U.S. export markets and third in total U.S. trade.
Are you tired of winning?
A major optical fiber product manufacturer who has a plant overlooking I85 in Norcross, GA announced Tuesday that it is planning a $138.9 million expansion of that plant and another facility in Carroll County GA.
OFS Fitel LLC said the expansion of the Norcross and Carrollton facilities will create 200 new jobs as parent company, Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd. works to increase its optical fiber manufacturing capacity. Last year, Furukawa announced that it wants to nearly double manufacturing capacity by next year.
More winning.

Never have seen it put that way before. Great choice of words, Mr. Wiltz.
I would question the wisdom of doing anything in Chihuahua, Mexico
Juarez?? That’s where they have found mass graves due to the cartels! Have fun with that UPS.
