On February 8, government shutdown theater comes back into town. Will there be another shutdown? In January, the Democrats decided to shut it down for three-days for illegal aliens. The end result was the Democrats lost. They got nothing. They got a spending bill in which they had no objections to; it funded Childrens Health Insurance Program for six years.
The exception was it was a week shorter concerning funding. Hence, why the news media and observers were wondering what was the point of this shutdown. Democrats thought they could blame the GOP, but you cant spin facts. The facts are the GOP always agreed on doing something with the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals program, which shields immigrants who entered the U.S. as children from deportation. Its a constitutionally shaky executive order, with legitimate separation of powers concerns, which is why the Trump White House decided on a gradual wind down last September.
It had a six-month enforcement delay to give Congress time to legally fix this program. March is the deadline. The GOP again agreed to fix DACA. They were going to fund CHIP. FISA, though a touchy subject, is probably going to get renewed. So, wheres the problem?
The Democrats went into this shutdown mess without a message or strategy. That was evident when CNN and MSNBC skewered their talking points for everyone to see. Yes, the GOP controls Congress, but you need 60 votes to do anything in the Senate; Republicans hold a slim 51-seat majority there. And this isnt the first time that one party who controls the Congress and the White House shut down the government; it happened under Carter.
With agreements on what Democrats wanted, everyone could easily see this shutdown was their fault and for illegal aliens, which is kryptonite to red state Democrats. Hence, why they broke ranks to vote for the initial spending package that failed to secure the 60 votes.
When they figured that the GOP wouldnt budge and the polling showed they could be blamed, they ran for the exits. Is two times the charm? Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said its not going to happen at the GOPs annual retreat at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia (via The Hill):
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday predicted that Democrats wont risk another government shutdown after they folded two weeks ago on their demands to add immigration legislation to a stopgap spending bill.
I dont think well see a threat [of a] government shutdown again over this subject. One of my favorite old Kentucky country sayings is 'theres no education in the second kick of a mule,' and so I think there will be a new level of seriousness here trying to resolve these issues, McConnell told reporters at a Republican retreat at The Greenbrier resort.
He said the threat of a government shutdown to gain leverage in immigration talks has clearly been eliminated.
Senate Democrats said much the same after a three-day government shutdown last month.
Well, well find out where the battle lines are next week. Regardless, even if no DACA deal is hashed out by then, the Senate will immediate make this a priority item, so this issue will be resolved. The Trump administration has doled out a very lofty deal in which it would give 1.8 million illegal aliens a pathway to citizenship, one million more than the original DACA pool of 800,000. The Democrats have so far balked at this generous offer because maybe, just maybe, they dont want one. After their opposition to the tax bill has blown up in their faces, they need something to get the base animated, as a great many Americans begin to see more money in their paychecks. Contrary to what the liberal media saysI know par for the courseits the Left who has all to gain by gambling with these peoples lives.
Now all we need to know is how much the rinos will give away to the invaders.
Will they run off to another Country this time like they used to do
Desperation will motivate them to shut down the government...they think that they have nothing to lose.
They may shut down the country just to get THE MEMO off the front page.
mitch the bit@h didn’t want to shut down the first time, he doesn’t like standing up for conservative principals.
I want to see Trump's immigration priorities and other priorities such as making English the official language, moratorium on legal immigration, mandatory e-verify, tax on remittances, and an end to birthright citizenship fully funded and enshrined into law BEFORE any stupid pathway to citizenship is given to adults who came here illegally in 2015 and are now pretending to be children of adults.
I kind of doubt it. It’s already off the headlines of Drudge and the Huffinglue Compost. The communists figure they’ve done all the spinning they needed on it. I mean, Crooked Hillary freaking commissioned the pee-pee dossier and that story remained in the headlines for about 5 minutes.
The bottom line is that unless there’s an arrest, another major firing or Mueller wraps up his investigation for better or worse, it’s all talk that’s just going to break across party lines with everyone else throwing their hands up in the air. It shouldn’t be this way, but our media is about as partisan and corrupt as North Korea’s, so the casually engaged citizen isn’t going to get a clear picture because the media deliberately obfuscates the facts to protect their third world political party.
There won’t be any “giving” unless you are talking about the Democrats being given their heads.
Can’t accept victory, I see.
We currently have just 4 Senators on the side of the citizens and the rule of law.
Cotton, Cruz, Grassley and Perdue.
Thats it.
Flake, Corker, Hatch, Heller, Alexander, Graham, McCain, Murkowsky, Hoeven, Rubio, Tillis, Burr, Lankford, Gardner, Cornyn, Cochran, Collins, Sasse, Kennedy, Shelby, Ernst, Blunt, McConnell, Wicker, Portman, Isakson, Johnson, Toomey, Rounds, Thune, Barasso and Enzi are all owned by the Cheap Labor Express.
The dims butts still hurt from the last time.
Cotton is the one leading the DACA negotiations. But that will be separate from this extension.
Trump should say memo #2 will be out the day before negotiations start
My middle name is Victory.
What's yours, Mitch?
If the dems think they’re being pressured by their base now, wait until DACAs start being deported come March.
With every one heading back to wherever in the hell he/she came from, Trump can state quite correctly “I tried to make a deal to keep you here and even give you a path to citizenship, but the democrats didn’t want any part of it”.
Wall Street journal Friday
...article that “Trump could walk away from immigration bill if it didn’t have all his points”
Trump is smart. He doesn’t want an immigration bill right now because it’s a terrible political move. Granting amnesty for 800,000 or 2 million illegal immigrants while the broken ACA remains the law of the land and makes health insurance unaffordable for tens of millions of American citizens would make ISIS a viable U.S. political party by mid-summer.
How long will it be before McTurtle rolls over?
Never
The party has come together to move forward
