A 12-year-old girl was booked on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm Thursday after a shooting at Sal Castro Middle School left four students injured, authorities said.
Los Angeles police do not believe that the shooting was intentional, spokesman Josh Rubenstein said Thursday evening.
"At this time, the information suggests that this was an isolated incident, involving the negligent discharge of a firearm, where innocent children and a staff member were unfortunately injured," the LAPD said in a statement.
The girl was taken to Los Angeles County's Central Juvenile Hall.
The gunfire erupted in a classroom at the school in the Westlake neighborhood shortly after the opening bell and caused numerous students to run from the area, according to Los Angeles police Officer Drake Madison.
A semiautomatic handgun was recovered from the scene.
"Someone decided to bring a gun, I guess someone was accidentally playing around with it," said Benjamin, a 12-year-old seventh-grader, whose guardian asked that his last name not be used. "They thought it was a fake gun."

She must have somehow got her hands on a misplaced police weapon. If it had been a weapon from a mere citizen it would have been intentional and the owner would already be in jail.
So now guns are sneaking themselves into schools and attacking children? This must stop.
If the teachers as well as the students in the Safety Patrol in Los Angeles were armed, that boy would not have a bullet in his head.
I guess I’ll have to change my stance on gun control: All self propelled guns must be outlawed.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Geography in the Los Angeles area, this didn’t happen in the City of Westlake located North of the San Fernando Valley.
It happened near the Westlake Area near Downtown Los Angeles.

There is absolutely no need to question why a 12 year old girl thinks it wise to pack semiauto heat to school in her backpack.
One report said the gun was in her backpack. She dropped it and it “went off”. How does a gun just go off and shoot two people?? One student was shot in the head and the second one in the wrist. The others were injured by “flying glass and metal”, according to local news. Doesn’t make any sense. That’s one incredible gun.
Well apparently she brought it by “accident”.

Hmmm. Reminds me of the story wherein a guy died from four gunshots to the back of the head. Was ruled suicide.
Of those 4 reporters, at first glance the second one’s name looked like ‘Somali’. Who would name their kid ‘Somali’? For that matter, who would name their kid ‘Sonali’?
