[Flashback] Why Fewer People Will Watch Obama's Last State of the Union

Whatever he says Tuesday night, the state of President Obama’s Nielsen ratings won’t be strong.

As the President prepares to give his annual State of the Union address one last time, he’ll likely score among the lowest viewership he’s had during his Administration and far below the numbers seen by Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

There’s not much Obama can do about it, either. State of the Union ratings have been dropping steadily as Americans have vastly more entertainment options on a Tuesday night in January than they did in years past.

Media worked overtime to explain Obama’s low ratings but they are quite happy to report that Obama’s first SOTU (eight years ago) has 48 million viewers (on TV) vs Trump’s 45.6 (on TV). But studies suggest that young people have abandoned TV for streaming in the past five years. Not a lot of reporters are bothering to Note that if only 5% of Americans switched from TV to streaming over the last eight years, Trump’s ratings beat Obama’s. And the reality is that for young people the switch was probably closer to 50% over that time. If that’s the case then maybe his SOTU was indeed the most watched in history.

I wouldn’t watch an Obama speech if you strapped me in chair like Alex DeLarge.

The truth was that while enough dopes (apparently) still “believed” in 2012, the fact is that by the time Obama gave his last SOTU it couldn’t be hidden - he was a terrible failure as president.

As evidence, I present the election of Donald Trump in 2016.

I’m actually shocked that many watched Obama’s last one; there was no more novelty to his presidency, and a lot of disappointment - especially among his chief supporters.

While they’ll try to twist the narrative years down the road, to connect Black Lies Matter to Donald Trump, the fact is the movement started on Obama’s watch, and I believe it was a direct result of blacks watching the end of his presidency near with no real gains by them. In fact, they were much worse off than 8 years before, watching hordes of additional immigrants come in and pass them on the socio-economic ladder - and it couldn’t be concealed. The “black” president who ran for office publicly opposing “gay marriage” while promising to bring opportunity to blacks ended up legalizing the former and ignoring the latter after using them for votes.

While the Congressional Black Caucus can pooh-pooh Trump’s accomplishments regarding black unemployment, they know he has done more in a year for them than Obama did in eight - but he’s threatening their tribal perches that are based on victimhood and grievance. Trump’s economic policies should “lift all boats” like a rising tide, and his immigration policies are addressing the problems that robbed many Americans - including blacks - of their jobs.
