Trump administration drops Victor Cha as pick for South Korea envoy 'over bloody nose strike concerns'

Reuters News Agency

30 JANUARY 2018 • 11:49PM

Victor Cha, who is reportedly no longer being considered by the Trump's administration' to be the next US ambassador to South Korea, has said a "bloody nose" strike against Pyongyang carried a huge risk to Americans.

Mr Cha, a former White House official, had raised concerns with National Security Council officials over their consideration of a limited strike on North Korea and about the administration’s threats to tear up a bilateral trade deal with Seoul, the Washington Post earlier quoted people familiar with the matter as saying.

Mr Cha, who for months had been expected to be nominated for the sensitive diplomatic post, laid out those concerns in the newspaper on Tuesday.

When an Ambassador or Ambassador (nominated) goes to the press, it BETTER be to support or define the President’s goals, not to throw a monkey wrench into the political operations.

If you want to do that, then be prepared to NOT be an Ambassador.

Victor Cha is against a preventive strike on North Korea and now won’t be US envoy in Seoul

Excerpts:

...Cha is hardly a softie. In his opinion piece, he suggests the US tighten the sanctions against North Korea, bolster its military cooperation with Japan and South Korea, build a “maritime coalition” to intercept ships carrying weapons technology, and continue preparing for military options.

...

Now, South Koreans and others who were reassured by Cha being the expected ambassador have to worry about who Trump will select.

A flavor of South Korean Twitter this morning: If they can’t even appoint Victor Cha, then who are they going to appoint? “I’m really scared.” https://t.co/NXJk33cDCn

Chances are good it will be someone less willing to disagree with Trump.

Good point. Going to the press like that is one way to screw the pooch on your nomination.

Too bad. From what I'd been reading, he might have been a good pick, but this blows it out of the water.

Rule One for someone going through the Senate confirmation process: Don't make headlines.

The upside here is that an idiot self-selected himself out of the process and Trump sends a message to Kim Fatty the Third.

Re: “Why is Trump appointing Bush retreads? These people should have no role in his admin.”

Agree.

According to Wiki, Victor Cha was the chief designer of Bush Two's North Korean policy.

My list of shockingly bad senior executive appointments by Trump is now at least ten.

These are no longer rookie mistakes.

This is a dangerous pattern of bad judgment and flawed principles.
