Yep.
“Think back to the Watergate scandal (if youre old enough). Nixon was in real trouble only when fellow Republicans started turning on him.”
Nixon was sabotaged by the Democrats, the media and the Washington establishment from the moment Nixon assumed the presidency.
There were originally plans to impeach Nixon over his bombing of North Vietnam sanctuary bases in Cambodia.
When Nixon won the 1972 election in a landslide, the impeachment process began in full.
Nixon had absolutely nothing to do with the Watergate break in. There is still no evidence as to who ordered it and no logical reason for it.
Nixon was impeached because he won the election in a landslide, was trying to get control of the federal bureaucracy.
Many Republicans never supported him. They just let him be impeached.
Note that the Trump legal transition team included high-ups from
McGuireWoods
Morgan, Lewis & Bockius
Morrison & Foerster
Kirkland & Ellis
Jones Day
Those are bigly law firms and limited the pool Mueller could draw from.
I, like you above, have argued for some time on these pages that extreme caution is necessary to avoid exposing national security assets or weakening criminal actions appropriately brought. That aspect I refer to as the legal dynamic.
But it is quite important to not overlook the powerful political dynamic since in view of the upcoming House elections it presents the most immediate timeline.
Fortunately for us, we have a politically adept, well-informed street fighter in the WH who appears quite capable of successfully managing both conflicting timelines. Moreover, Trump he has demonstrated he is quite skilled at shaping public attitudes.
IMO, that management will include giving his base the confidence of knowing he thoroughly understands the threat (that arguably yet exists) and is addressing the matter, while at the same time giving middle-of-the-roaders and Dem voters serious doubt, and doing that very soon.
“Tramp had damn well address this more important issue in his SOTU address and in a significant, meaningful way.”
I disagree entirely. Trump should stay the Hell away from this. There are plenty of people who can talk about this, he should not.
His SOTU should focus solely on the economy (people are seeing their paychecks increase THIS month from the tax cuts), safety and security (hammering the Democrats and Schumer mercilessly over support illegal aliens over American citizens) and the budget (Hammering Democrats for holding the military and American security hostage to illegal aliens again). Stick solely to hammering his on-the-rope opponents over these things and the SOTU will be a huge success.
Meanwhile, while all of this is going on, Sessions finds it so important to appear in person in Louisville Tuesday to address ‘violent crime and opioid abuse’. We are not talking about Detroit, Chicago, etc. But Louisville. All the while D.C. is burning in corruption. What kind of priorities is going on with this person?
Oh noes!
You have awaken the anti Sundance tribe here on FR.
They will not be pleased.
When you are thinking about getting divorced visit every lawyer in your area that does that kind of work. Puts your ex in a bind.
Not only arrests, but military presence in those department offices, account locking and full forensic dig. Scare the crap out of all low-level perps. Give immunity to only so many early rat outs.
We keep being told to be patient. Might I ask, just what is it we are being patient for?
If that's the case, they already know what information is contained in the Republican-written memo. It's their own information.
So why do they want the release of the memo stopped? So they can redact the hale out of it and give some of it to Mueller to redact. No doubt the contents are damaging to themselves and not to national security.
But the biggest problem I see in this deal is what you identified in your comment.
It is the Congress that has oversight over the DOJ and FBI, not the other way around. The DOJ and FBI have no authority to tell congress what to do or not to do. They are the tail and the congress is the dog.
So why are we letting the tail wag the dog in this case?
When you point out some blaring observations, then I am suspect of anyone who tries to deny it. I am not voicing an opinion, just a flat out truthful observation. Someone can say they don’t like it. But they can’t say that it is ‘wrong’. It is what it is.
Please recall, the goal of the Watergate break in was to obtain the list of prostitutes the DNC was hiring. Let that sink in.
While I am certainly disappointed in Sessions so far, his being in Louisville is appropriate. The opioid crisis is extremely strong in the midwest. Indiana is in the midst of a heroin nightmare that is decimating many small towns and rural areas. I recognize big cities also have problems but on a per capita basis opioids are much more of a problem in rural mid-America than many people realize. Session is doing God’s work in focusing on this problem before it is too late.
The FBI is likely corrupt down to the local offices spread around the country. They recruit true believers in their cause.
I don’t know why with absolute certainty, but I suspect they’re being cautious - maybe a bit too much - because they expect this investigation(s), which is/are nowhere near complete, is going to lead to indictments and they don’t want to jeopardize any prosecution. Call it somewhat informed speculation.
Dr. Gorka addressed the importance of strategic communication on Hannity’s show last week. It’s very important for people like Nunes, Goodlatte, et al, to manage the message to the American people in terms of content and timing. Build expectations and demand and deliver without too much delay. Then follow the first memo with, “But there’s more to come,” thus building the “case” with the public to the point that the media can’t ignore what’s developing - even if they choose to mis-characterize it. Which they will...
Alright, that is one viewpoint and you set out important matters that should be touched on in the SOTU.
Hopefully, we disagree only on the time and place Trump chooses to address this important criminal and political issue (perhaps even if that action is limited to filing federal charges v multiple high-ranking fed officials).
Hopefully, we agree our POTUS addresses it in the near term; otherwise, of course, he will appear impotent to both sides of the issue. Dems will be overjoyed and we should expect some amount of R's will not show up for the House election.
And the committee should not allow Shifty-Eyed Schiff to release a democRAT version of their FISA abuse summary memo. The spin would make us all dizzy.
Patience. Patience. Patience.
Military tribunal might be the way to go and the way it goes.
