Gentrification requires incomes to support it and the belief that depressed neighborhoods can be brought back. Seattle has Microsoft and other good employers. When north OC lost the aerospace industry it lost its anchor for good incomes. Nothing comparable in size has replaced it and with the business-hostile climate in CA nothing likely will.

The suburban American culture that once was typical of SoCal began to leave as well, crowded out by a poorer culture from the third world. Population density is much higher, public schools are worse, and yet housing prices are through the roof. Not a recipe for attracting young Americans. The neighborhoods they can afford are culturally alien and not especially safe. I’ve hoped for gentrification, I just don’t see it happening. Demographic forces unleashed by the Bushes, Clinton, Obama are still working against it. You can’t flood a region with the third world’s poor and expect it to flourish.
