He knew of the Soviet involvement and said he knew that if we and the Russians went toe-to-toe in the Middle East, it would result in a nuclear (my words) World War (III).
His only viable option was to help Israel. Richard Perle commented the world came closer to a nuclear World War III in October, 1973 than even the Cuban Missile Crisis.
And most of the world didn’t realize it then (or now).
