How "Trump Trauma" Is Crippling the News Media
Hollywood Reporter ^ | 23 Jan 2018 | Howard Kurtz

Fox News analyst Howard Kurtz argues that press misjudgment has upended coverage of the White House and boosted the president's agenda in this exclusive excerpt from his new book, 'Media Madness.'

On Jan. 8, 2017, days before Donald Trump was to assume the crushing burdens of the presidency, he faced a very different kind of problem: Meryl Streep.

The iconic actress slammed him in her speech accepting the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes, attacking him for, among other things, having allegedly mocked a disabled New York Times reporter during the campaign. The next morning, Hope Hicks, the president's loyal young assistant who was almost always by Trump's side, pulled out her phone to play footage of Kellyanne Conway on the CNN and Fox morning shows.

Kellyanne said that charge had been repeatedly refuted and added that if Streep were so concerned about the rights of the disabled, she should have spoken out about a disabled boy who had been badly beaten by young thugs shouting anti-Trump epithets in a video that had been posted on Facebook. Trump loved that answer and started venting about his media coverage.

“This is not just a feud or a fight or a battle. It is scorched-earth warfare in which only one side can achieve victory. To a stunning degree, the press is falling into the president’s trap. The country’s top news organizations have targeted Trump with an unprecedented barrage of negative stories, with some no longer making much attempt to hide their contempt. Some stories are legitimate, some are not, and others are generated by the president’s own falsehoods and exaggerations. But the mainstream media, subconsciously at first, has lurched into the opposition camp and is appealing to an anti-Trump base of viewers and readers, failing to grasp how deeply it is distrusted by a wide swath of the country.”

I just looked it up. Meryl Streep is 68. Perhaps Trump should Tweet about fake skin. Honestly, at some point somebody is going to pick off of Streep what appears to be a pink thread. She will unravel and into being will plop a blond Jaba the Hut.

I love it. The media is far beyond any enemy’s goals as it self destructs. Even my lib associates change the subjects when I can daily demonstrate to them that their journalists are...well...quite a few fries short of a happy meal.

Little do they realize, because they are liberals, that every negative story, every specious allegation, every snide comment from their side magnifies President Trump in the eyes of his voters................

Trump GAVE THE PRESS A ROPE - it was their choice to hang themselves... I'm still betting the New York Times new 'digital readers' are fakes - paid for by George Soros...

I saw all his weaknesses — the bluster, the bullying, the refusal to admit mistakes

Huh? Those aren't weaknesses. Those are tactics. And they have worked.

PS, does this guy really think Trump doesn't learn from his mistakes, that he became a multi-billionaire by throwing good money after bad? Really?

She blew her wad and became irrelative decades ago.

Meryl Streep testified before Congress, and on TV talk shows, about Alar’s dangers. The public panicked: school systems removed apples from their cafeterias, supermarkets took them off their shelves, and orchard owners lost millions.

Most of the media has passed the Point Of No Return.

A few generations ago people got their news from newspapers and news magazines like Look, Life, Newsweek, Time, U.S. News & World Report, Saturday Evening Post, etc.

The advent of television news gradually put the print media in the back seat.

Now the internet is replacing TV and what is left of hard print news industry.

And the major media has hastened the process by abandoning hard news and becoming water-boys for the democrats, socialists, communists and islamists.

Heck - most of the younger generation have probably never read any printed news at all.

Well - maybe an old issue of PEOPLE in the dentist’s waiting room.

He simple facts is, Trump just doesn’t take any s#it from them, and gives back twice as much as they put out.

If Meryl Streep disintegrates, she will be Jabba the Swordnose.

That's the way government works:— if it's broke, throw money at it.

Trump never learned to do that because he would have had to practice with his OWN money. Only "public servants" can afford to do that.

“January 2017 ... Trump ,,, started venting about his media coverage.”

Excuse me, Howard, but Trump’s media coverage was a common theme through his entire campaign, beginning the day he announced he was running. It probably was #2, after “Build the wall”.

Thanks for posting this. It’s fascinating. Nothing will change, but it’s nice to see someone calling the MSM out on their anti-Trump vendetta.

Trump was talking about the media during Obama’s time in office. He realized the great diconnect between the coasts (NY / Los Angeles) media and the middle working class America.

Most of the RINOs cave and try to suck up to the MSM out of fear. Trump went after them. In doing so, he exposed their complete bias and contempt. It was a risky move and a genius politcal ploy.

Conservatives have God, religion, faith in country, belief in a hereafter. Leftists only have The State. The State is all powerful and all mighty. They will do anything to preserve their power because they believe only in power.

One of the Obama officials quoted Chairman Mao in a graduation speech. She said she carried around the Little Red Book and that all power comes from the barrel of a gun. There is no right or wrong; only power. Those in power can exercise it.

That’s what’s at stake to leftists. They believe in nothing but controlling the country and remaking it.

Trump has also exposed ‘conservative’ press, such as the National Review, Beck, etc. as being part of the Media Indistrial Complex. They are the fake enemy - the Washington Generals - intent on putting up a good show but ultimately there to do nothing but lose.

Trump exposed the country club Chamber of Commerce RINOs as part of the enemy as well. Cheap labor express folks like Flake have no place in a nationalist Republican party.

Been amazing to watch.
