Schumer’s rare double-buckle on the shutdown infuriates Democrats on the left

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell doesn't smile much.

But as the Kentucky Republican sat in his chair on the Senate floor, listening to Chuck Schumer, announce that Democrats would vote to reopen the federal government, his lips spread into a nearly ear-to-ear grin.

He looked like the cat that had just swallowed the Democratic Party.

What McConnell knew - and what infuriated Democratic activists across the country were just finding out - was that Schumer's strategy of shutting down the government to force President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans into locking in an immigration deal had failed in epic fashion.

Not only did Schumer come up short of getting a deal to prevent the deportation of "Dreamers" but he divided a Democratic Party that had previously been unified. And he let Trump and McConnell walk away from it all as the clear winners on politics, policy and strategy.

The move immediately drew the wrath of immigrant-rights activists and the party's left wing.

"It's a debacle," said Rep. Luis Gutierrez, one of the leading immigrant-rights advocates, when informed of the Senate's 81-18 vote to move ahead on a stopgap bill to extend government funding without an agreement on Dreamers. "I'm just saddened by it all."

Charles Chamberlain, executive director of the liberal group Democracy for America, said Democrats can't expect to win elections if they back down from a fight every time they take a punch.

"Today’s cave by some Senate Democrats was not only a stunning display of moral and political cowardice, it was a strategically incoherent move that demonstrates precisely why so many believe the Democratic Party doesn’t stand for anything," Chamberlain said.

I wonder if DJT told Schumer something about the FISA memo and scared his sorry arse so we could move on?

If Rep. Luis Gutierrez is unhappy, I am happy.

I think these guys are getting ready for what is coming. I think the word is on the street.

I think what may be coming is historic.

Chuckie was bluffing all along. His bluff got called and he folded. Now the democrat base is screaming.

Chuckie has maneuvered himself into a very bad position. His national base will demand amnesty/path to citizenship. But that’s not what the majority of voters want in states where democrat Senators are up for election this year. And worst, the deal doesn’t give him much time to maneuver out of this conundrum and the shutdown failure will still be fresh on everyone’s mind.

The real news here is that the media could not control the narrative on this. Any other President would have let them. Not Trump. He fought back and established reality.

This win for the United States was brought directly to us by President Donald J. Trump.

I removes one of the biggest weapons in the Democrat arsenal.

Go Donald!

Winning!

It’s different now that Trump is president and not a Bush.

I doubt it. Even the biased polls and a good portion of the Democrat media said Trump had the winning position.

Under a lot of pressure to have a win against Trump the Rats made a very stupid play.

Were it not for the steel balls of Trump, McConnell would have (once again) dropped the soap waiting for Schumer and the Democrats.

Your analysis is spot on.
The Democrats have been maneuvered into a lose lose political situation.
It is hard to imagine any way to distract their base from this issue.
They will be trying in the coming days.

YES - this is what happened. GOPe always folded with the first card being played.

The interesting think is did McC keep Linda Graham in the dark - that would be funny
