'Put Trump in his place': nationalism awakens in Mexican presidential race

Donald Trump's habit of slapping down Mexico is feeding nationalist sentiment in the country's presidential election campaign, prompting contenders to defy him and strengthening the hand of the frontrunner, who is courting the anti-establishment vote.

In the past week, the three top contenders for the July election have all said Mexico will not pay for the wall the U.S. president wants to build on the U.S. southern border. None has made the point more forcefully than Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a veteran leftist leading the opinion polls.

A victory for Lopez Obrador, who was runner-up in 2006 and 2012, could usher in a more distant and confrontational relationship between the two nations as he promises to lessen Mexico's economic dependence on foreign powers.

That dependence is strongest with the United States: Mexico sends about 80 percent of its exports to its northern neighbor and the United States has traditionally been the source of the bulk of foreign direct investment. Under Trump, however, Mexican views of the United States have soured.

"Without being disrespectful, we're going to put him in his place," Lopez Obrador said of Trump on Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico port of Veracruz, the scene of a notorious national humiliation when U.S. forces occupied it in 1914.

You address the currency of Mexico, or at least the pieces of eight. It is interesting that it was used as legal tender in the early United States. I’m not convinced that made pre-Mexico or Mexico into a great nation.

No, not great, but a source of wealth, i.e. silver. Certainly, the English colonies had nothing like it.

When touring the Anthropological Museum in Mexico City, the part dedicated to the Aztecs was labeled ‘Mexica’ so I assume that’s what gave the capital city and later the nation, its name. I know that years ago, if you said ‘Mexico’ in Mexico it was assumed you were referring to the city, not the nation.

And I agree with you, Mexico, in spite of its many natural advantages has never achieved greatness.

If a leftist wins in Mexico, don’t be surprised if he doesn’t invite China & Russia to do naval drills in the Gulf of Mexico and set up bases in Mexico. That is what the US has done in the Black Sea and on Russia’s borders.

They’re doing us a favor:

The US already had a trade deficit with Mexico, something that even w/o an upsurge in Mexican nationalism would act as a force for US trade protectionism.

But then consider:

A US trade deficit w/Mexico, which then FLIPS US THE BIRD...?

Well that’s simply ASKING for it:

So THANKS..!

Our path is clear.

What are they gonna do? Cut funding to the US? Build a wall to keep us out? Raise tariffs on US product going into Mexico. Stop drugs coming into the US?

“Anything to distract from the horrors in their own S—-hole.”

indeed. 29,000 murders in Mexico in 2017.

that’s 22.8 murders per 100,000

compared to the U.S: 4.9 murders per 100,000

Mexico really IS a sh*thole ...

make their failed nation a place where Mexicans actually want to live.

The result of leftist nationalism is likely to be the opposite.

Trump will just call him “Labrador” which will infuriate him even further so, Trump will double down and call him “Chihuahua”. Our media will be outraged but it will be Trump having fun like he does with “Rocket Man”.

"Maybe we should declare war on Mexico." I have been urging this for years, Doug, although I am normally a peaceful pair of dice which just like to roll. If Polk, Eisenhower, with his thoughts on govt/private sector entanglement, or Reagan were president today, having seen how his `86 act was abused, we would be in Mexico City by now dictating surrender concessions from these cabrons. Frankly, I'd like to see someone win elections in mexico and make an effort to actually turn the country around from being the crony-capitalist, corruption-ridden shithole that it is. Perhaps, if mexicans were more interested in making Mexico great, it could actually become a decent place to live, and we wouldn't have to worry about being overrun by foreigners in our country.

Mexico in many parts is already a war zone. It was just announced today that Mexico saw 29 thousand plus murders in 2017. In comparison the US in 2016 saw 17 thousand plus murders. Population of Mexico is 127 million and the US is 323 million. Nuff said.

Hope they both run on the platform of bringing back all the Dreamers, ordinary wetbacks and assorted criminals from the US back to Meh-e-coh in order to “Make Meh-e-coh Great For Once” and not the “Sh!thole” that Vincente Fox ruled over.

If this means you shut your southern borders and stop allowing southern Hispanics to flow through to our border along with your illegals then great; put us in our place.

Grow a pair and make your country great too and stop invading ours.

Mexican nationalismo extends all the way up Aztlan.

They look down on the stateside Hispanics but they believe it is their land and do not recognize the US border.

People tend to forget that Mexico is older than the US (yes, I know it is younger as an independent nation, but as an idea, it is older than we are). And for many years it was richer. We based our dollar on the Spanish/Mexican piece of 8 which was legal tender here until 1858. In much of Mexico the climate is just about perfect for human beings. Crops can grow year-round.

Older? So what?

You are talking about Spanish Mexico! NOT indian savages Mexico.

Not sure of the "pieces of eight" thing.
Gold coins from any country on earth were accepted. Spanish gold coin (from Spain) was simply more plentiful in the Western Hemisphere.

"Pieces of eight" was a western name for a "Real," the official Spanish monetary unit, "cut" into 8 segments for convenience.

The monetary unit of mexico has always been the "peso."

the worst "country" in history, and the oldest is still with us, is the ummah! (koranimals)."

Yes, I am. But Spanish Mexico was settled and civilized before the English got very far into North America. There was a university in Mexico City almost a century earlier than Harvard, the first in English America.

Not sure of the “pieces of eight” thing.

The Mexico mint was established in 1535. The real/peso was the basis of our dollar. The official weight and fineness of our dollar was based on that of the Spanish/Mexican milled dollar

My point is that Mexico in 1830 was considered richer and more powerful than the U.S. Now, the events of 1836 and 1846 proved that that was not the case. But because today, we see Mexico as poor and we as prosperous, we tend to think that it was always this way, but it wasn’t.

We’ll take everything from Texas to the Panama canal.
How’s that for a border!
