Police union slashes number of ‘get out of jail free’ cards issued
NY Post ^

The city’s police-officers union is cracking down on the number of “get out of jail free” courtesy cards distributed to cops to give to family and friends.

Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association boss Pat Lynch slashed the maximum number of cards that could be issued to current cops from 30 to 20, and to retirees from 20 to 10, sources told The Post.

The cards are often used to wiggle out of minor trouble such as speeding tickets, the theory being that presenting one suggests you know someone in the NYPD.

The rank and file is livid.

And why is the City of New York Police Commissioner even allowing this to take place?

Not sure how this passes equal protection muster. If one person gets out of a traffic ticket because they know somebody, but another person in the exact same cicumstances sans courtesy card was ticketed/fined, that is not equal protection under the law.

How is the token reduction in the number of cards going to do anything but raise the price on EBay? The law of supply and demand hasn’t been repealed yet.

I’ve got a dozen or so of these cards in my glove compartment. From various PBA groups and police unions. Got me out of quite a few speeding tickets. There’s a finesse to using them - you can’t just present to a cop and act like he has to let you slide. You have to sort of let it be visible as you fumble with your license and registration and they can then give you a warning and a pass if they feel like it. No guarantees.

I remember in a certain town there was a small law firm that could get tickets dismissed; no insurance, speeding, no registration or whatever. You paid them and it was dismissed.

I went in the Army for a couple of years, cleaning up my life I noticed I had a dog no license, 30 bucks. They said they would take care of that, too.

The recruiters were amazed when they did a background check and found a long list of tickets - all dismissed - including the dog one.

When I later moved to this town I asked around for the "good" law firm and everyone said "There's no law firm like that!" I realized it was just in that other town and must have been a "better call saul" type of deal.

I received these cards in CT when I fixed a cop’s computer.

It was just their business card with a mark on it. A dogear or whathaveyou.

And how you used it was up to you. You could say something like “Oh, you’re with Milford PD ? I know such and such.” and they would ask if you have their card. You present it, and they take it with them.

Police work being corrupt ? NO WAY NOT HERE. But I played the game and it worked. Saved me about $120.

The only people the justice system is effective against are those that can’t afford to defend itself against it.

Chicago PD has them too, but you have to be a relative or good friend of a cop to get one:

The other trick is the cops give the hatband from their dress uniform to their wife/kids to hang on the rear view mirror of their car. That way, when a Chicago cop pulls them over, they just see that and know they have a relative of someone "on the job" and "extend them a courtesy". Used to work to get out of parking tickets too, but now those are issued by private contractors so I don't know if it works.

If you aren't lucky enough to be related to a cop, you can always donate to the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police, and they will send you a little sticker or medallion you can put on your vehicle. Those don't work as well, but when I've had one on the car, it seems like I get pulled over a whole lot less than when I didn't have one.

A Dragnet episode was about fake cards that were being sold to people. They did not work.
