Two CNN correspondents claimed during an episode of The Lead with Jake Tapper that an asteroid could potentially threaten the Earth if the government shutdown continues.

Forman and CNN anchor/chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper were discussing how federal employees foregoing paychecks and government-funded ventures affected by the government shutdown would impact the economy.
"It's not the just government workers—if the shutdown happens. It will have a real cascading effect on the economy," Tapper remarked.

Foreman added that if Congress does not reach a deal on a funding package and DACA amnesty negotiations, illegal aliens would be "thrust into a dangerous legal limbo."

If I may add a note of physics:
Any asteroid hitting the earth will not be undetected. It will be detected as it would be a bit obvious. Tsunamis, earthquakes, bright lights in the sky, the usual stuff.

In keeping with the “doomsday” spirit on this thread, I believe that Alabama was almost trolled a few minutes ago.
I had my TV on QVC for background noise. All of a sudden I heard a loud click and then static. A few seconds later I heard the dreaded “beep, beep, beep” of the EAS alert. Strangely enough, after the beeps, QVC came back on. There was no explanation for the alert. I immediately thought of Hawaii.
Strange.
Canada might invade, and no government official would be available to surrender to them!

Does this mean that if the Duchy of Grand Fenwick decides to invade we won’t be able to stop them during the shutdown?
Or maybe a Russian sub will get grounded off New England and the party comes ashore we can’t stop them???

Remember, if the Indians had stopped the aggressive landing at Plymouth Rock, they wouldn’t be living on Reservations BUT they also wouldn’t have home grown sheep to fleece in their Casinos....
Asteroids do have a tendency to change course miss the planet when the US Government is functioning, so maybe CNN has a point here.
