Angela Merkel's future in balance as riven SPD heads for crunch coalition vote
Deutsche Welle ^ | 21 January 2018 | Staff

Germany's Social Democratic Party is about to vote on whether to negotiate another so-called grand coalition with Angela Merkel's conservatives. If the party says "no," the chancellor's options may be running out. . . . snip

As a result, the SPD spent most of the week denying the very obvious rift in the party. Schulz, whose one-year tenure as party leader would surely be up in the event of a "no" vote on Sunday, has already admitted that he couldn't be sure that he had enough delegates on his side.

Something for those FReepers who are interested in the efforts to form a new government in Germany.

Elections were held last Fall but to date no government has been formed and the latest, last-ditch, effort looks like it may be "blown up" by the youth side of the SPD. History repeats itself?

My opinion, in Germany, like most of western Europe the politicians are old, stale and totally out of touch with what troubles the "little people". I expect new elections within the year and there is no telling where the peoples unhappiness will take us. Just my 2¢.

Ehhh. Germans are IMO fairy complacent and cowed. And their economy is going along pretty smoothly. Unless it relates to killing of nuclear power, I am doubtful they will do anything do upset the power of Ms. Merkel to commit national suicide by admitting millions of Muslims. They’re too afraid to express their feelings; especially when any non-Merkel alternative will be seen as rejecting inferior races or peoples.

There’s five key themes going on with this German political mess:

1. “Merkelism” probably hit its peak two years ago, and the majority of Germans want a replacement figure, but none of the parties have anyone dynamic or of the statue of Merkel.

2. As much as the SPD claims to be the party of the working-class...it’s a declining number of people who feel that the party is doing much of anything for the working-class.

3. Both the center-right (CDU) and center-left (SPD) are losing voters in each election over the past thirty years. In September, the two combined to get 52-percent...lowest amount since WW II. You can project at the next election that they will not be able to reach 50-percent combined.

4. As much as the economy is anchored and not suffering, there’s no growth or expansion, and most folks worry over their jobs, and future pay-raises. You can survey working-class folks and find at least ten percent who haven’t seen a pay-raise in a decade. You have a growing number of retirees on welfare because their pensions can’t cover basic living.

5. Finally, you come to a total disconnect between the Berlin leadership and the rest of the country. As you say, here are the ‘little people’ talking and the Berlin folks can’t grasp the conversation.

My prediction come Monday...the SPD has just enough votes to move up to the coalition deal and sign it. Both the CDU and SPD know that the 28-page document is marginalized and just geared to get them into 2019...where they dissolve and call for another election. I would suggest that the public is accepting of this because the two alternate routes (minority government or immediate election now) are lousy choices.

If you think this is a fairly weak gov’t now....just wait...by the 2019, it’ll be even weaker.

I'm often baffled by the use of language.

...grand coalition with Angela Merkel's conservatives...

Say WHAT? In what parallel universe can Angela Merkel be remotely considered conservative???

“In what parallel universe can Angela Merkel be remotely considered conservative???”

Germany, or Western Europe.

Her party’s name includes the word “Christian” and she has not run the budget into hyper-debt. That is considered somewhat extreme, by Euro norms.

Berlin_Freeper doesn’t have a problem with Islam. He thinks Qur’an 5:60 saying he is literally a pig is a matter of interpretation or some none sense.

Merkel personally is on the leftist fringe within CDU/CSU which has, as a party, lurched to the left under her leadership.

Six years ago the euro was at $1.50. So it’s down substantially from that.

I have no idea what Steve Van Doorn is talking about.

I do know he is mentally unbalanced, stalked me in the past and has me living in his head rent free.

I am a big fan of term limits. Mostly the political mess here is due to no term limits. Which creates a system based on rot.

Also, close elections seems to become the current trend. Look at UK’s Theresa May losing her majority. Look at Donald Trump losing the popular vote and now the government shutdown. Macron was an exception and has been enjoying a geopolitical tour.

As for seniors. Germany is an aging population and people who have given little thought for their retirement need to downsize their lifestyles quite a bit. No living in a big empty house.

I guess we should know about Merkel’s future soon, an hour or so.

New government will form up this week, with cabinet posts announced.

Key thing will if Saarland’s Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer is listed on the cabinet (highly believed to be Merkel’s hand-picked successor), and where the Pfalz’s primary CDU gal....Julia Klockner ends up as a minister. Both are believed to be on the short list to replace Merkel.

As for the SPD? There’s just too many folks within the party frustrated with the coalition agreement.

I’ll go out on the limb and predict after the EU election in June of 2019....some new German national election is called for by November of 2019.

One reason SPD does not want to be an official part of the coalition, is that would make 3rd place winner, right wing populist AfD, the official "leader of the opposition". None of the Establishment parties wants to give the AfD that sort of power and influence.

Let me help you:
Islam is a religion that is:
a. like all other beliefs but has not matured yet.
b. unable to change and will always be like they are today
c. Something else?

BF said, "living in his head rent free"

Free rent is what your giving Islam with the added benefit of destroying your country. This conversation will be living in your head once your figure it out.

BF Said, "(Steve has) stalked me"

You think you're that important? Interesting.

If you still don't get it. You voted for Merkel because you believe she can do better for your pocket book then other parties. Which means you believe Islam will grow out of there problems and in the mean time the police can deal with some of the death and destruction they cause. In other words you believe in fairy-tails.

You have no understanding of Islam. Someone you know is nice which makes Islam acceptable. That is what you believe in a nut shell.

While you believe Qur'an 5:60 which makes you literally a pig that only looks human is a matter of interpretation. Interpenetration are not made by the Muslim individual like all other beliefs.

My post: 11:33:34 AM
BF post: 11:35:27 AM = ~2 minutes
2 minutes - time it took to notice the post = zero time to read post.

What is the point. You have no idea what I'm saying.
